In recent times, prediction markets that facilitate quick bets on the fluctuations in cryptocurrency prices have seen a significant uptick in participation, with many new players entering this competitive space for a chance to profit. On October 6, Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN) launched prediction contracts that allow bettors to wager on whether Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH), and several other prominent cryptocurrencies will rise or fall within 15-minute periods. Kalshi, a recognized federal prediction market, provides the necessary framework for these contracts.

The Financial Times recently reported that contracts with durations of five to 15 minutes accounted for over half of the cryptocurrency betting activity on platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket as of March 2026. Here’s what I anticipate will unfold next.

Did you miss out on Nvidia back in 2009? This unique signal has surfaced once again. In 2009, a “Double Down” signal indicated a promising opportunity for a lesser-known chip manufacturer, Nvidia. Now, this same “Total Conviction” signal is emerging for a company just a fraction of Nvidia’s size.Continue »

High Fees and Low Winning Odds

I foresee that the majority of bettors engaging in 15-minute markets are likely to incur losses, with platforms profiting from substantial fees. As this cycle progresses, I anticipate that regulatory bodies will start implementing stricter guidelines.

During any given 15-minute span, the price of Bitcoin—and that of other leading cryptocurrencies—displays random variations due to numerous influencing factors. These include trade order flows, news developments, and a high volume of algorithmic trading.

Casual bettors, such as day traders, have no advantage when betting on a 15-minute timeline, whereas high-speed automated firms do. Though this is a risky venture, it won’t deter individuals from persistently testing their luck. Regardless of the outcome, the platforms benefit from transaction fees.

For example, Kalshi charges a 3.5% fee on the stake from individuals accepting posted contract prices. This means one needs to be correct over half the time just to break even—considering that achieving this even once is already quite difficult.

Additionally, bettors contend with speedier opponents. A report by Galaxy Research on October 1 revealed that 69% of 2.9 million Polymarket accounts believed to be operated by real individuals completed the study at a loss, totaling $338.9 million lost collectively, while 125,429 automated accounts profited $246.8 million.

On certain occasions, the platform itself is also a participant. Kalshi has its own market-making entity, Kalshi Trading, which takes the opposite side on some of its clients’ bets, according to Bloomberg reports from December 2025. A proposed class action lawsuit filed in November 2025 claims that it adjusts prices to the customers’ disadvantage—a claim that Kalshi refutes.

Is it wise for investors to utilize 15-minute markets as a hedge?

For dedicated investors aiming to grow their wealth over the long haul, there is no scenario in which spending on prediction market contracts for cryptocurrency price movements during any specific 15-minute timeframe is advisable. It proves ineffective as a hedge or a means to generate direct returns.

A hedge should offer protection in case your primary investment declines. If you hold substantial amounts of Bitcoin or Ethereum and their prices drop within a 15-minute window, waiting an additional 15 minutes may completely negate that temporary loss. Betting on short-term prediction contracts to protect against such declines entails incurring repeated fees, which is also an excessive commitment for investments that should ideally mature over time.

Lastly, my forecast includes a heightened regulatory focus on prediction markets, and this is already unfolding.

On September 25, a federal appeals court determined that Ohio and Tennessee possess the authority to regulate these contracts under their gambling legislation, creating a legal divergence that may escalate to Supreme Court review. Furthermore, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) proposed regulations regarding conflicts of interest for exchanges and associated market makers in late July.

Should the Supreme Court decide to examine these cases in the upcoming months and favor the states aiming to restrain prediction markets, we may notice a reduction of 15-minute markets throughout much of the United States. Regardless of the outcome, I advise against participating in these markets.
