The latest chapter in the Final Destination saga, Final Destination: Bloodlines, which premiered to great success in May, is heading to HBO Max on August 1st. This makes it the most commercially successful entry in the series’ 15-year history.
This updated take on the classic series revolves around a family haunted by fate. It begins with a woman who narrowly avoided death in 1969 due to a premonition. Now, decades later, her descendants – individuals never meant to exist – are falling victim to a series of bizarre and improbable accidents as death comes to collect its due.
If you missed its theatrical run, this is your chance to see Tony Todd’s portrayal of mortician William Bludworth. It marks one of his final performances before his passing in 2024. Co-director Zach Lipovsky explained to Polygon that Todd was determined to be involved. “He really wanted to be in this movie. He was not at his best when we started production, and we were unsure of his condition near shooting. He really, really wanted to be there. We aimed to build out the story to explore him to give depth to his origins as a character.”
While this home release may not feature the IMAX visuals used during the elaborate death sequences, the movie excels at creating a strong connection between its audience and the characters as a family is relentlessly pursued by death. Rather than simply being tools for creative and gruesome deaths like previous iterations of the franchise, Bloodlines presents relatable individuals the audience can connect with and care about.
Final Destination: Bloodlines is expected to be one of 2025’s most talked-about horror releases, not only for its surprising plot twists but also for its successful revival of a defining horror series from the 2000s.
Stream Final Destination: Bloodlines starting August 1 on HBO Max.
