A Canadian national, 22-year-old Cameron Albert Redman, will spend a year in a US federal penitentiary. He was given a 12-month sentence for his role in a scheme involving the theft of both cryptocurrency and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) by compromising social media accounts.

Reports indicate that in 2022, Redman, together with accomplices, illegally gained control of social media profiles belonging to artists and well-known brands. They then exploited these compromised accounts to distribute deceptive links.

These fraudulent links directed users to fabricated websites designed to mimic legitimate platforms used by artists or established companies. These sites promised visitors opportunities to receive NFTs at no cost.

Victims who interacted with these links were prompted to approve transactions under the false pretense of
receiving complimentary digital assets. However, this action granted Redman’s associates unauthorized access to
their digital wallets.

This fraudulent group then proceeded to steal both cryptocurrencies and NFTs, which they subsequently liquidated.
Law enforcement officials in the United States have reported that the scheme impacted over 200
individuals, generating approximately $794,000 in illicit gains in a relatively brief time frame
.

Notable figures and initiatives fell victim to this scheme, including high profile individuals and companies such as Beeple, Gary
Vaynerchuk, the Nouns community, and the renowned luxury brand, Louis Vuitton.

Court
documents reveal
that Redman has a prior criminal record in Canada. As a teenager, he was
convicted in connection to a large-scale SIM-swap theft that resulted in the theft of over $40 million in
cryptocurrency. Authorities have described Redman as the chief planner of these illicit activities, coordinating
the scheme from his family’s residence.

The current charges against Redman include multiple counts: conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and
conspiracy to commit identity theft
