It’s widely known that character customization is a major draw for many players in Monster Hunter Wilds. After all, flaunting stylish armor and weaponry crafted from the remains of formidable foes is part of the fun. While the existing Layered Armor system allowed for appearance customization, a similar feature was absent for weapons until recently. The newly released Title Update 2 finally introduces Layered Weapons, enabling players to alter their weapon appearances. However, the process is a bit more involved than the armor system.

How to Get Layered Weapons

Gaining access to this new feature doesn’t require completing any specific quests. As long as you have updated your game, the option to customize your weapon’s appearance is available. However, obtaining the desired looks will take time and effort.

To unlock a layered weapon option, you must first fully develop the weapon’s progression tree to its final stage. This means forging a weapon all the way to Rarity 8. Achieving this unlocks the Rarity 8 design, along with any preceding designs from earlier stages of the weapon’s evolution. A notable example is the Lala Barina series of weapons. Prepare to invest time in gathering specific monster parts and earning Hunter Badges.

Customizing Palico weapons is less demanding, working similarly to Layered Armor. Simply crafting a high-rank Palico weapon grants you the ability to use its layered weapon appearance.

Artian Weapons are also compatible with this appearance alteration system. If you wish to change your weapon’s appearance from its distinct futuristic sci-fi design, you can now do so. Conversely, you can also make your hunter appear as if they are wielding advanced, high-tech weapons.

Obtaining these options will require significant time investment and good fortune. Unlocking the Layered variant of an Artian Weapon involves forging the Rarity 8 version and subsequently fully augmenting it. Considering that Tempered Monsters drop both Hunter Badges and Artian Materials, you’ll likely be hunting them quite extensively to expand your Layered Weapon options.

One noticeable limitation of the current system is the inability to change weapon colors. While armor color customization is available, the absence of this option for weapons, like Rathian weapons, is disappointing. Hopefully, the Layered Weapons system will receive further enhancements in future updates.
