A compelling aspect of Elden Ring Nightreign lies in its character evolution across multiple playthroughs. Echoing roguelite design principles, FromSoftware integrates this through the Relic system.

Relics function as augmentations, attaching to characters to enhance inherent skills, weapon proficiencies, spellcasting, and more. These deliver diverse and valuable enhancements which, with careful selection, can significantly boost a player’s chosen character build.

However, this system presents a challenge.

Given the randomized nature of Relic drops, Nightreign players often accumulate them in storage for potential future use. For example, a player primarily focused on melee combat might retain a Relic offering substantial archery bonuses, anticipating a future Ironeye playthrough, or a dedicated bow-only run.

This hoarding behavior consequently clutters players’ inventories with numerous unused Relics. Some of these stored items may be outdated, with superior versions acquired hours prior, potentially unnoticed.

Nightreign provides a means to sell unwanted Relics for in-game currency, but the low return often discourages players. Recently, Reddit user Scufozzover1 revealed a previously unknown limitation: a maximum number of Relics a player can possess.

You can’t play if you have too many relics

As demonstrated in their Reddit post, exceeding the Relic inventory limit prevents players from embarking on Expeditions. Scufozzover1 shared the error message, a rare sight for most players.

The game suggests utilizing the Relic Rite feature to discard unwanted items, a practice recommended for consistent inventory management as players progress and discover more powerful Relics.

The discovery of this limitation was delayed by the game’s lack of a visible Relic inventory counter, leaving players unaware of the storage capacity. Scufozzover1 estimates the limit to be approximately 1,000 Relics, a substantial quantity.

If you’re not a Relic packrat, you likely already understand this. Otherwise, you’ll appreciate our Elden Ring Nightreign guide. We’ve recently enhanced it with Remembrance (character quest) guides for the Executor Remembrance quest and the Duchess Remembrance quest.

Furthermore, FromSoftware recently unveiled the initial wave of significantly more challenging iterations of the game’s Nightlords. These Everdark Sovereign bosses possess not only increased health and damage output, but also employ novel attack patterns.
