Ahoy there, gaming enthusiasts! News has surfaced that legal representatives from Ubisoft apparently contacted Matt Ryan, the actor who voiced Captain Edward Kenway in the beloved game Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. The issue? It seems Ryan mentioned a potential remake of the game in a previous convention video, a video that surfaced online and was enough to ruffle some feathers over at Ubisoft.
For those unfamiliar, the Black Flag remake is a hotly anticipated project. Although Ubisoft has yet to officially confirm its existence, reports suggesting its development have been circulating within the gaming community for a couple of years.
During this most recent convention appearance, Ryan addressed the rumors, explaining the situation in a candid manner. “I’m not sure what to say about it,” Ryan stated when probed about the remake. “The thing is, previously, someone was recording me [gesturing toward the phone filming him], and I was just talking freely. I didn’t realize I was being recorded. After that, the company threatened to take legal action. So, I am not saying anything this time.”
It remains unclear if Ryan was fully aware he was being filmed during this recent interaction. While he acknowledged the phone camera pointed at him, the original clip was initially shared on TikTok before apparently being removed. It has since been reposted on X (formerly Twitter), ensuring the story continues to spread.
We have reached out to Ubisoft for their official statement on the matter.
Hopefully, Ryan won’t face any further complications stemming from these comments. Should you encounter him at an upcoming convention, it might be wise to avoid broaching the subject of a Black Flag remake, especially with a recording device in hand.
