Reports indicate that Sony Pictures Animation is currently in the early stages of developing a standalone animated movie centered on Hobie Brown, better known as Spider-Punk. This fan-favorite character gained significant popularity after his introduction in 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, where he was one of the many diverse Spider-People from across the multiverse.

Daniel Kaluuya, the actor who provided the voice for Spider-Punk, is reportedly involved in the project’s development alongside Ajon Singh, who is also contributing as a co-writer. Singh is known for his screenwriting work on the forthcoming film Primetime.

While it’s important to note that many projects in development don’t always come to fruition, this news is undoubtedly exciting for fans of the character. Spider-Punk quickly became a standout in Across the Spider-Verse, capturing audiences with his unique visual style and compelling personality. His distinctive animation and fashion-forward design, combined with his rebellious and laid-back attitude, made him an instant hit.

In the film, Spider-Punk served as a point of contention for Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore), who noticed Hobie’s close relationship with Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld). However, Hobie’s independent spirit ultimately aligned him with Miles when it mattered most.

This standalone film presents an opportunity to explore Hobie’s character more deeply, particularly his rebellious nature. After his dramatic departure from the Spider-Society in Across the Spider-Verse, a solo adventure would allow him to confront his own adversaries without being tied to a larger, multi-dimensional narrative.

Considering the box office success of the first two Spider-Verse films, Sony’s interest in expanding the franchise with spin-offs is understandable. Shifting the focus away from Miles’ story could be a bold move, but it could also effectively capitalize on the vast universe established in the earlier films.

It remains to be seen whether the film will draw inspiration from existing Spider-Punk comic books or forge its own original narrative. The Spider-Verse version of the character already differs significantly from his comic book counterpart, potentially paving the way for a fresh storyline set against the backdrop of a 1960s London-inspired punk scene. It also is yet to be seen if this new project will benefit from a comparable generous budget, animation creativity, and lengthy production cycle enjoyed by prior Spider-Verse installments. But keeping in mind Hobie’s own words, “*he doesn’t believe in consistency*”, thus a very different movie style would be perfectly aligned with the character.
