Dropout, the comedy streaming platform formerly known as College Humor, has seen its popularity skyrocket, largely due to the success of its program, Game Changer. Hosted by Dropout’s CEO, Sam Reich, the show presents comedians with various imaginative, often tricky, and always funny games each episode, described by Reich as complex and devious. Given the show’s appeal, speculation has arisen regarding a potential video game adaptation of the hit series. It appears the answer is a strong possibility.
During a recent interview with Reich, which explored the design, playtesting, and balancing of Game Changer’s unique games (the full interview will be published later), the topic of video game adaptations based on Dropout’s shows came up.
“Absolutely, it’s something we’ve considered,” Reich stated during the Zoom conversation. He specified that any potential game would likely be based on either Dimension 20, the platform’s popular D&D-style series, or Game Changer itself.
“We’re definitely interested and have had discussions about it,” the Dropout CEO and Game Changer host explained. “The biggest hurdle at this point is bandwidth. If we’re going to do it, we want it to reflect our brand and feel authentic. That means we need to be heavily involved. We wouldn’t simply outsource the IP to a third party. It has to feel personal, and we need to be genuinely excited about it, and it has to offer something different enough to justify the investment of our time.”
Reich also pointed out the significant financial investment and development time required for creating video games as a considerable obstacle.
When asked if the idea of a Game Changer game was a serious consideration or just a distant dream, Reich confirmed that they “definitely have ideas” for what a Dropout game could be and are actively working towards making it a reality.
“Part of our strategy to develop that skill set was releasing those smaller web games [featured in Game Changer],” Reich said. “It’s about dipping our toes in the water, seeing if we can even speak that language.”
Reich expressed confidence that a Game Changer game is on the horizon, stating, “I’d say we’ll probably do one. It’s just a question of what and when.”
Don’t miss the season 7 finale of Game Changer, premiering exclusively on Dropout on August 11.
