Nexon, known for live-service titles, is shifting gears towards single-player experiences. In a surprise move, the company behind The First Descendant has unveiled a trailer for “Woochi the Wayfarer,” an upcoming action-adventure game inspired by classic Korean folklore.
Alongside the trailer release, it was announced that Jung Jae-il, the celebrated composer behind the scores for “Parasite” and “Squid Game,” is joining the project. The game is being built using Unreal Engine 5, promising stunning visuals.
For fans of Korean historical dramas and those eager to experience a game deeply rooted in Korean culture, “Woochi the Wayfarer” could be an exciting release.
What is Woochi the Wayfarer?
“Woochi the Wayfarer” draws inspiration from the renowned Korean tale, “The Tale of Jeon Woo-chi.” This story centers on a scholar who utilizes his extraordinary abilities to combat injustice and challenge the corruption of the elite, much like a Korean Robin Hood with supernatural powers.
The original folktale unfolds during a period marked by widespread famine and pirate incursions along Korea’s southern coastline. As the common people struggled to survive, Woo-chi chose to employ his skills to alleviate their suffering.
However, don’t expect a typical “hero saves the day” narrative. The character’s appeal lies in his complexity. He is not a conventional hero; he’s a mischievous trickster who deceives royalty, plays pranks on dishonest officials, and creates chaos, yet balances these actions by aiding the oppressed.
Eventually, Woo-chi is apprehended, as his actions catch up with him. But facing execution, he requests one final act: he paints a horse, then leaps into his artwork, escaping on horseback. Later, he is defeated by Seo Gyeong-deok, another powerful magic user, and together they journey into the mountains for spiritual training.
The ending might seem a bit abrupt, reflecting the dynamics of medieval Korea and the Joseon period, characterized by ongoing interactions between the educated elite and the general populace.
This era, spanning approximately 400 years, witnessed significant advancements in numerous fields, including the alphabet, culture, medicine, science, and technology. It also included almost a decade of Japanese invasion. Ultimately, Korean and Chinese forces united to repel the Japanese.
Bringing Korean Culture to Gamers
“Woochi the Wayfarer” is being developed by LoreVault Studio, utilizing Unreal Engine 5, in collaboration with Nexon. Nexon is the publisher behind well-known games like Maple Story, The First Berserker Khazan, and The First Descendant.
Adding to the game’s allure is the involvement of Jung Jae-il, recently honored with the Technical Award for Music at the Baeksang Arts Awards. Jung Jae-il is known for creating musical scores for “Squid Game,” “Parasite,” and “Mickey 17.”
Nexon has expressed a commitment to showcasing Korean culture and artistry within the gaming world. CEO Park Yong-hyun stated last June that the “window of opportunity (for Korean games) will not stay open for many more years” because of stagnation in PC, mobile, and console gaming sectors. His statement’s validity is open to interpretation.
South Korea has long been a prominent force in the gaming industry. From iconic Starcraft professional gamers to popular titles such as MapleStory, Lineage, Stellar Blade, and The First Descendant, South Korea’s impact on gaming history is undeniable.
Currently, “Woochi the Wayfarer” has no confirmed release date, but it is planned for a global launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
