Experts suggest the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is poised to see its cryptocurrency sector rise to become the second most significant industry within the nation in the coming half-decade. This projection is based on the UAE’s innovative regulatory approaches and a business climate that attracts digital asset companies, according to insights from Chase Ergen, a high-ranking executive at DeFi Technologies, a publicly listed firm investing in digital currencies.
In a discussion with Cointelegraph, Ergen highlighted the UAE’s reputation for proactive leadership, pioneering legislation, and fostering a strong crypto community. He further elaborated with a prediction:
“While oil sales are currently the UAE’s primary economic driver, blockchain technology and related industries are expected to become the nation’s second-largest business sector within the next five years. This sector could soon constitute a substantial, double-digit percentage of the UAE’s overall economy.”
Ergen emphasized that the UAE’s favorable environment for crypto businesses is supported by several key factors, including a well-defined regulatory structure for cryptocurrencies, a thriving network of leading crypto industry professionals, a strong financial position free from debt, allowing the government to invest heavily in technological advancements, low levels of crime, appealing tax incentives, and a visionary government.
The UAE has strategically positioned itself as the premier hub for cryptocurrency and technology in the Middle East and Africa (MENA) region. This comes at a time when an increasing number of countries are exploring crypto adoption, and global powers are competing to lead in the burgeoning field of digital finance.

Growing Crypto Adoption by Nations in 2025
The year 2025 saw an upswing in the adoption of crypto by nation-states, partly driven by policy shifts following the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump in the United States.
In July, the Trump administration published its anticipated crypto report, detailing the government’s plan to establish the United States as a global frontrunner in the crypto space.
Pakistan, in a significant turnaround, abandoned its long-standing resistance to cryptocurrencies in November 2024, a day before the US presidential election.
Since then, Pakistan has created a national Bitcoin reserve and formed a national crypto council dedicated to developing a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets within the country.
Several sovereign wealth funds, including the UAE’s Mubadala and Norway’s sovereign fund, have gained exposure to Bitcoin (BTC) through investments in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and other investment instruments.
K33, a crypto research firm, reports that Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, one of the world’s largest government-controlled investment funds, increased its Bitcoin investments by 192% over the past year.
