Do you recall the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse scene featuring Peter Parker depicted in Lego form? That memorable sequence was entirely crafted by Preston Mutanga, a then-14-year-old animator. His Lego-style recreation of the movie’s initial trailer had garnered the attention of the filmmakers. Now 16, Preston continues his impressive work, transforming various scenes and trailers into Lego masterpieces. Recent endeavors include Lego-fied versions of the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer and the Stranger Things trailer, rendering them with a playful, toy-like aesthetic. However, it’s his recent takes on scenes from KPop Demon Hunters that truly stand out, so expertly made they suggest a potential collaboration among Sony, Netflix, and Lego.
Preston has posted a pair of videos to his TikTok account displaying his Lego interpretations of Huntr/x. One video showcases a snippet of a key moment from the film’s initial musical piece, “How It’s Done.” It captures the group skydiving towards a Lego-constructed Seoul, ready to battle demons on their descent.
The second video, while less focused on action, is longer and features a clever nod to Preston’s Spider-Man background. It depicts a scene approximately a third of the way into the movie, after the Saja Boys, a demonic boy band, begin influencing the population. They have weakened the barrier between the human and demon realms, and the girls are strategizing while maintaining their K-pop image. Their manager, Bobby, enters with updates on their rivals’ increasing popularity. As he displays videos of the Saja Boys’ fans dancing to their popular track “Soda Pop,” a brief appearance of a certain web-slinger can be seen on his phone.
Preston’s exceptional talent is undeniable. Hopefully, Lego or Sony recognize his potential and offer him an opportunity when he’s old enough.
