Some content from Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will not be transitioning to its sequel, Black Ops 7. The primary reason is a deliberate choice by the game developers.

Recent additions to Call of Duty games, particularly character skins, have sparked considerable discussion. While we won’t rehash specific controversies, referencing the Beavis & Butthead skins offers a relevant example.

The key news is the developer’s recent announcement outlining which items will not “carry forward” into Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. They’ve shared their rationale behind this decision.

“We understand there’s been significant discussion lately regarding the essence of Call of Duty,” the statement explains. “Some players feel we’ve strayed from the core elements that define Call of Duty: a deeply immersive, intense, visceral, and, in many respects, grounded experience.”

The developers aim for Black Ops 7 to capture the spirit of Black Ops 2 – aiming for a ‘spiritual successor’ vibe. While technically a direct successor, the emphasis is on recapturing the original game’s feel and atmosphere.

“Black Ops 7 should feel true to the Call of Duty franchise and its particular setting,” the statement continued. “Therefore, Operator and Weapon content from Black Ops 6 will not be transferable to Black Ops 7.”

The developers have clarified that some items will be carried over, specifically double XP tokens and GobbleGums.

Importantly, this decision primarily concerns the core Black Ops experience and does not significantly impact Call of Duty: Warzone. “All your Black Ops 6 content remains accessible in Warzone.” The focus is on maintaining aesthetic consistency within the Black Ops series itself, rather than across the entire Call of Duty ecosystem.

Looking ahead, what new content can players expect? The statement promises that “In Black Ops 7, bundles and items will be carefully designed to align with the Black Ops identity,” adding that “We need to achieve a better balance, focusing on delivering a more immersive and core Call of Duty experience.”

Beyond the focus on visual consistency, the statement also touches upon the efforts to combat cheating within the game – a constant battle in the online gaming world.

For PC players, the ‘Ricochet’ anti-cheat system, which has deep access to your computer, is receiving further enhancements in Black Ops 7.

“New systems for detecting and addressing cheating are being implemented, designed to swiftly identify and eliminate cheaters,” the statement confirms. “Some components will be tested during the Beta phase, with the full suite launching alongside the game. We are dedicated to proactively protecting fair gameplay.”

The previous announcement didn’t confirm whether these anti-cheat changes would be expanded to other Call of Duty titles. The team will be watching the results before making a decision which implies this is very likely, and allows the team to be flexible.
