Several developers utilizing Google Cloud’s BigQuery for Solana
An anonymous programmer posted a warning on X, as reported in an August 26th message that was shared by Trading Strategy co-founder, Mikko Ohtamaa. The programmer recounted being billed $18,000 for one month of use.
The programmer detailed that three separate queries each incurred charges exceeding $5,000. While support eventually lowered the costs to roughly $4,000 per query, the incident has fueled apprehension within the developer community.

Another developer, also using a pseudonym, reported a similar situation. They indicated that a solitary query aimed at accessing a Solana data table processed multiple terabytes, leading to a $5,000 expense. After contacting Google support, and with the assistance of internal Google staff, they were fortunate enough to receive a full refund.
A widespread concern centers on the absence of mechanisms to prevent uncontrolled spending. Ermin Nurovic, the co-founder of Flat Money, pointed out the service’s lack of hard spending caps. He cited the potential for significant charges incurred by a cloud function stuck in a loop, without any prior warnings.
Google Cloud’s BigQuery is a fully-managed data warehouse that allows for the analysis of vast datasets using SQL. Its integration with Solana in October of the preceding year streamlined access to historic on-chain data, including information about NFT sales and significant token transfers.
