The Ethereum Foundation is temporarily suspending new applications for its Ecosystem Support Program (ESP). This pause allows the Foundation to re-evaluate its strategies for providing financial support to developers and projects within the Ethereum ecosystem.
This announcement, made public on August 29th, reflects the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to refine its approach to nurturing the Ethereum ecosystem. The goal is to better align grant distributions with the long-term objectives of the Ethereum network.
A comprehensive plan outlining the Foundation’s revised funding priorities is anticipated to be released in the fourth quarter of 2025.
While the application portal is closed for the time being, the ESP will continue to honor its commitments to current grant recipients and maintain its support for public goods initiatives. Furthermore, the team will still be offering Office Hours, providing developers with access to mentorship, valuable feedback, and connections to resources beyond financial assistance.
Reasons Behind the Ethereum Foundation’s Grant Suspension
According to the organization, the substantial expansion and growing sophistication of Ethereum necessitate an evolution in its funding methodologies. Rather than simply reacting to incoming grant proposals, the Foundation intends for ESP to proactively champion projects that directly address vital strategic imperatives for the Ethereum network.
This strategic shift will guarantee that available resources are invested in areas that offer the most enduring positive impact on Ethereum’s usability, robustness, and overall performance.
The Ethereum Foundation stated:
“This period of redesign will allow us to shift our focus toward strategic initiatives. We are moving away from a reactive approach to grant-making and adopting a more proactive model that aligns with the objectives of other teams within the EF.”
The Foundation also emphasized that its core values remain consistent. These values include providing funding for open-source infrastructure, research initiatives, and developer tools; supporting community-driven projects; and bolstering resources that ultimately strengthen the entire Ethereum ecosystem.
Since its inception in 2018, the ESP has transformed from a basic grants program into a more comprehensive initiative that provides both financial and non-financial assistance to Ethereum developers.
In 2024, the program allocated nearly $3 million to 105 different projects, spanning areas such as developer tools, data analytics, educational resources, research studies, and community-focused events.
Past beneficiaries of the program include projects like Commit-Boost, BundleBear, Web3Bridge, ZK Playbook, and the Ethereum Cypherpunk Congress.
