Hallownest’s intricate world holds numerous concealed secrets. Some are so well-guarded that stumbling upon them naturally is rare. However, to achieve full completion in Hollow Knight and earn all in-game accolades, you must embark on a search for the elusive Mister Mushroom.
Your quest requires you to encounter Mr. Mushroom a total of 7 times throughout your playthrough. These meetings are spread across the map in rather inconspicuous locations. Crucially, these encounters can only occur late in the game. You need to have vanquished the three Dreamers before he will even appear. Furthermore, the Spore Shroom charm must be equipped; otherwise, you won’t comprehend his unique dialogue.
This guide details each step and location necessary to find Mr. Mushroom, and explains how to unlock the final, hidden cutscene at the conclusion of your adventure.
The Spore Shroom Charm
If you haven’t acquired the Spore Shroom yet, first, travel to Queen’s Station, neighboring the Fungal Wastes. The desired chamber lies directly below this station.
Proceed to the chamber indicated in the provided image, identified by its pool of acid. Locate the small opening on the far left of the room. Traverse this passage to the right, and you will find a small islet holding the Spore Shroom charm.
The Poem
Ensure the Spore Shroom is equipped throughout the following steps, or these interactions will not occur.
While not essential for the Mr. Mushroom storyline’s completion, it is recommended to complete this step first if you desire deeper lore knowledge or a more immersive quest experience.
Within Kingdom’s Edge, journey to the large vertical shaft located in the southeast corner of the map – recognizable by the substantial Geo accumulation at its base. Descending, search for a hidden opening in one of the eastern walls. This passage leads to a plaque that can only be deciphered when the Spore Shroom Charm is equipped.
The plaque bears the following inscription:
Spawn of self, their minds unite
Aside the source of acid blight
Aglow in darkest winding depths
Winds all howl above fossilstone steps
Monarchflys in air set still
To root’s domain and snail once shrill
Path of Wyrm, at new lands entered
There journey’s end. The Kingdom ventured.
Though cryptic, the poem alludes to Mr. Mushroom’s future locations. For example, “spawn of self” references Mr. Mushroom’s origin in the Fungal Waste, and “Winds all howl” refers to the Howling Cliffs.
The Fungal Wastes
Begin by returning to Queen’s Station and proceeding east and down to the chamber indicated above. A small passage exists on the far left side of this chamber, where you previously met Cornifer and purchased the Fungal Wastes map.
Mr. Mushroom’s mumbling will alert you to your proximity.
Strike Mr. Mushroom with your nail, prompting him to turn and impart his first piece of cryptic knowledge. Intriguingly, it appears he is addressing someone else entirely. Some speculate that this may be a reference to Team Cherry’s earlier title, Hungry Knight; the truth remains unconfirmed.
Regardless, he will eventually vanish, relocating to the next site.
Kingdom’s Edge
Next, travel to Kingdom’s Edge. Head to the Hidden Stag Station near the Palace Grounds, and ascend to the tram. Take the tram east to the large vertical room above the southern Hive entrance.
This shaft contains three small rooms; Mr. Mushroom resides in the middle one. Once more, strike him and listen to his dialogue, after which he will proceed to the third location.
Deepnest
Venture into the spider-infested caverns of Deepnest. Travel to the Distant Station, descend, and proceed east.
Continue eastward through the large chamber until you reach a smaller area with an upward exit. Seek the chamber beneath the broken tramway. A western entrance, adorned with luminous mushrooms, will further aid in your search. Bypass the Dream Warrior, and Mr. Mushroom will await you.
Howling Cliffs
This time, he is located inside Nailmaster Mato’s residence. To reach it, travel to the Stag Nest station, head north from Greenpath, or use the passage in King’s Pass. The entrance is down and to the right of Gorb’s Statue, in a small tunnel beside a spike pit.

Ancient Basin
This location is straightforward. Return to the Hidden Station and head left as far as possible, utilizing the Crystal Heart for quicker movement.
Progress past the lengthy spike pit. Immediately after the Broken Vessel boss encounter, continue down the passageway; Mr. Mushroom will be waiting nearby.
Fog Canyon / Queen’s Gardens
Find Mr. Mushroom directly below the Overgrown Mound. Return to Queen’s Station and ascend to the long, vertical room filled with jellyfish. Head westward down the path located halfway up this room and continue left.
Enter Queen’s Gardens, and upon reaching the platforms, ascend. Mr. Mushroom will be found to your left as soon as you enter this new area.
