One frequent complaint surrounding Call of Duty games lately revolves around their substantial storage requirements.

Consider last year’s Black Ops 6. Contrary to some rumors, the initial download size on PlayStation 5 was around 84.4 GB. Activision recommended allocating a minimum of 102 GB of free space for optimal performance. While shy of the speculated 300 GB figure, it was still a significant amount of digital real estate.

Good news for console gamers: a forthcoming update, initially revealed by the Twitter account PlayStationSize, is designed to significantly compress Call of Duty’s file footprint.

Call of Duty Update 01.080.000 has been observed in the PlayStation Network database. While the PlayStation 4 version shows a decent improvement, the PlayStation 5 version demonstrates a truly substantial reduction.

Massive Storage Savings: New Call Of Duty Update Clears 100 GB on PS5

PlayStation 4 owners can anticipate a reduction from 81 GB (version 01.78) to 62 GB (version 01.80), resulting in approximately 19 GB of recovered space. However, the real savings are on the PS5.

PlayStation 5 players will see a dramatic shift, with the update shrinking the game size from a hefty 126.224 GB (version 01.078.000) to a mere 25.377 GB (version 01.080.000). This translates to a substantial gain of over 100 GB of precious storage.

This significant optimization has fueled speculation that the upcoming Call of Duty installment, potentially titled Black Ops 7, might offer a considerably more manageable download size. This represents a welcome shift from previous trends and could even play a role in allowing the game to run on the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.

Regardless, gamers will undoubtedly appreciate some relief for their hard drives, which have been consistently burdened by Call of Duty’s large installations. However, new concerns may emerge as Black Ops 7 is expected to implement Secure Boot as part of its anti-cheat measures. As previously witnessed in the Battlefield 6 beta, Secure Boot, while intended to prevent cheating, can sometimes block legitimate players from accessing the game.
