Is there a more compelling story of transformation than Anakin Skywalker’s descent into Darth Vader, one of the most iconic villains ever conceived? From his origins as a young boy enslaved on Tatooine, first seen in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999), to his reign of terror across the galaxy as Darth Vader, chronicled in numerous stories like his own comic book series, and culminating in his redemption in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983), Anakin’s journey has captivated audiences for decades. Now, a new perspective is emerging with the upcoming novel, Master of Evil, penned by the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author, Adam Christopher. This book offers a glimpse into Darth Vader’s world shortly after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005). Look for the release of this novel on November 11.
Master of Evil will explore Darth Vader’s initial days as the Emperor’s enforcer, his pursuit of overcoming death, and the early development of the Galactic Empire. In an exclusive preview provided by Penguin Random House, fans can explore the intricate connection shared by Darth Vader and his commanding mentor, Emperor Palpatine. After experiencing a Sith ritual in a sacred cave located on Mustafar, Vader finds that he has more questions than answers. He is immediately reminded of the cost of his ambitions.
The Emperor’s office, perched atop the Imperial Executive Building, was expansive and imposing. A magnificent curved, floor-to-ceiling window dominated the far wall, before which the Emperor’s angular throne sat on a raised platform. This design allowed him to observe the Coruscant cityscape whenever he desired.
On this particular occasion, the Emperor was indeed gazing out of the office window. Behind the turned throne, Darth Vader knelt with his head bowed, the steady rhythm of his respirator echoing within the room, the only sound present. The Emperor and Vader were alone. The two Royal Guards, usually adorned in scarlet robes, had been dismissed as soon as the Emperor’s apprentice arrived.
Time drifted on. Outside the glass wall, the air traffic flowed continuously, despite the late hour on Coruscant.
The Emperor finally broke the silence. He remained facing the window, and from Vader’s vantage point, his master’s raspy voice felt disembodied.
“I sense something stirring within you, my apprentice,” the Emperor stated.
Vader’s head lifted, though he remained silent, his gaze fixed on the back of the throne.
“Desire,” the Emperor continued, adding a brief, low chuckle. The throne rotated, revealing the Emperor. Only the lower portion of his face was visible, but his yellow eyes gleamed from within the darkness of his hood.
“You possess a thirst for power, Lord Vader. This pleases me. However, it is your pursuit of knowledge that I find…intriguing.” The Emperor paused again, his voice descending into a whisper, the tone of an old, yet powerful man, which he most certainly was, appearances aside. “Perhaps you witnessed something in the cave on Mustafar.”
Vader remained silent, bowing his head in submission.
“Or perhaps something in that cave saw into you.”
Vader looked up once more. The Emperor’s pale face was now revealed, his features drawn back into a grotesque grin.
“Power you already possess, my apprentice. The more you acquire, the more you will crave. This thirst will drive you, as it does all Sith. This is beneficial,” the Emperor paused, his voice lowering further. “However, knowledge can be perilous. There exist facets of the dark side that you will only learn when you are ready, and I will determine when the time is right.”
“I seek only answers, my master.” Lord Vader said after taking a breath. “You promised to lead me on the path of the dark side.”
“Be warned, Lord Vader,” the Emperor snapped. “Secrets have been shared and secrets remain veiled. Your journey has only just begun.”
“Yes, my master.”
“Ambition is valuable, but it may also become your undoing.”
“Yes, my master.” Vader initially looked down, then lifted his head. “But I am prepared to learn. You stated you could teach me…”
The Emperor rose swiftly, defying his apparent frailty. He approached the edge of the dais, looking down at his apprentice, and began to laugh, quietly at first before unleashing a chilling cackle.
“You were fascinated by that story, were you not?” the Emperor inquired. “The tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise? Ah yes, the dark side possesses the power to ward off death, even to transcend it.” He moved closer to Vader, pointing a gnarled finger. “That is what you seek to know, is it not? The secrets that lie beyond. You believe they will allow you to reunite with her, do you not?”
Vader’s gaze remained steady, unflinching under his master’s glare. “It is what you promised, my master.”
The Emperor dropped his hand, his face contorting in anger. “Much you must still learn, Lord Vader. Including patience.” He walked back toward his throne. “Perhaps allowing you to witness the power of the vergence on Mustafar so soon was a mistake.” He turned back to Vader. “Perhaps you are not as ready as I believed. I overestimated your comprehension.”
Vader finally stood. As the Emperor lowered himself onto his throne, Vader ascended the dais, his large frame towering over his master.
“When I bled the kyber crystal within the cave, the dark side revealed itself in a way I did not expect. I have seen it, my master.” He clenched a fist in the air. “I have witnessed the true power of the Force. Your teachings have only scratched the surface.”
A faint smile appeared on the Emperor’s face. “Good, my apprentice. Good. Your experience on Mustafar has proven worthwhile. It is true, much about the dark side remains to be understood.” The Emperor stood, his smile vanished. Vader took a step backward as his master extended his hands. “But heed its promises.”
The Emperor’s hands contorted into claws, and blue lightning erupted from his fingertips, aiming to encircle Vader’s body in crackling energy. Vader was propelled backward, the lightning carrying him across the room. He hit the floor and rolled, the power continuing to flow from the Emperor, his face twisted in hatred.
The assault ceased. The Emperor stepped off the dais and approached Vader, who attempted to rise, his mechanized breathing labored. Smoke rose from Vader’s armor.
“Remember, Lord Vader,” the Emperor said, standing over his apprentice. “There is no power in the Force that does not belong to me, for I am the dark side.”
