Future content for the reimagined Final Fantasy Tactics, and even a potential sequel, hinges on the support fans show for the upcoming Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. Purchase and enthusiasm will be vital, though not a certainty, for any follow-up plans.

In a recent interview with Wired, director Kazutoyo Maehiro hinted at the possibility of integrating elements from the 2007 PlayStation Portable release, Final Fantasy Chronicles: War of the Lions, into the remake. Maehiro stated, “Our main goal is to faithfully recreate the original game.” He acknowledged that fans have voiced interest in seeing features like the Onion Knight and Black Knight classes included, but he “cannot make any promises” about these elements making their way into The Ivalice Chronicles.

For newcomers to this tactical RPG and spinoff universe, The Ivalice Chronicles will feature a new “Squire” difficulty mode. Moreover, the remake will incorporate the script enhancements made in War of the Lions for its classic mode. Whether a full-fledged sequel will be developed is dependent upon the success and player response to The Ivalice Chronicles.

Maehiro, who began his journey with the franchise as an events planner for the original 1997 Final Fantasy Tactics, explained, “If [The Ivalice Chronicles] achieves success, it will undoubtedly spark discussions regarding potential sequels or new tactical RPGs within the series.” Earlier in the year, the art director of the original game spoke about his desire to experience Final Fantasy Tactics running at 60fps on the PlayStation platform.

The announcement of the Final Fantasy Tactics remake was made during PlayStation’s State of Play event back in June. Scheduled for release on September 30, this RPG will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and the upcoming Switch 2. Notably, players will be able to get a free Switch 2 upgrade for The Ivalice Chronicles, but currently, there will be no physical edition available for the new Nintendo console.
