Ondo Finance, alongside the Ondo Foundation, has unveiled a significant initiative in the realm of real-world asset tokenization, launching over 100 tokenized versions of U.S. stocks and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) on the Ethereum network. This venture, dubbed Ondo Global Markets, provides access to qualified investors across the Asia-Pacific, Europe, Africa, and Latin America regions. The ambitious project aims to increase its offerings to 1,000 tokenized securities by the close of 2025, with plans to broaden blockchain support to include BNB Chain and Solana through interoperability solutions like LayerZero.
These tokenized stocks and ETFs are backed by real assets maintained in custody with U.S.-registered broker-dealers, coupled with cash reserves, providing investors exposure to the overall economic performance of the underlying instruments. The platform facilitates round-the-clock minting and redemption operations for tokenized assets five days a week, connecting on-chain liquidity with established financial exchanges. Distinguishing itself from other tokenized stock initiatives with restrictive transfer or liquidity terms, Ondo Global Markets prioritizes easy access, empowering investors to move tokenized equities across wallets, trading platforms, and DeFi systems without difficulty.
The platform offers a wide array of tokenized assets, featuring shares of prominent companies like Apple and Tesla, in addition to fixed-income ETFs. Nathan Allman, CEO of Ondo Finance, characterized the platform as a “breakthrough in financial access,” opening doors for global investors to engage with U.S. securities with the same efficiency that stablecoins brought to the U.S. dollar. The initiative has also formed partnerships with crucial infrastructure providers and platforms such as OKX Wallet, Bitget Wallet, Trust Wallet, BitGo, Ledger, and Chainlink, which provides oracle services for accurate asset pricing.
Ondo is also collaborating with Block Street, an interoperable liquidity layer for tokenized stocks, to deliver institutional-grade liquidity for these assets. Block Street’s platform allows users to borrow tokenized stocks utilizing USDT and to use them as collateral for USDT loans, developing a two-way market for assets including AAPL, NVDA, and TSLA. Block Street’s testnet has attracted more than 200,000 users and is supported by firms such as Citadel, Point72, and Jane Street.
The concept of tokenizing U.S. stocks is gaining momentum in the cryptocurrency sector. Kraken and Backed have broadened their xStocks offerings to BNB Chain, Tron, and Ethereum, while Bybit and Gate also facilitate trading of these tokenized assets. Robinhood has introduced over 200 tokenized versions of U.S. stocks for its European Union users on the Arbitrum network. Meanwhile, Coinbase is actively seeking regulatory clearance from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to make tokenized stocks available to U.S. investors.
Despite its increasing popularity, the tokenization of equities remains in its infancy. According to a recent McKinsey study cited by Block Street, the total market capitalization of tokenized financial assets, excluding stablecoins, could reach $2 trillion by 2030. This expansion is contingent upon the ability of financial institutions with blockchain capabilities to obtain a competitive advantage within the evolving market landscape.
Ondo Finance is also developing its own Layer 1 blockchain, called Ondo Chain, that’s purpose-built to promote on-chain institutional-grade financial markets. Though no concrete plans to launch tokenized stocks and ETFs on this network have been released, the company has historically committed to expanding its range of real-world asset offerings through strategic partnerships, such as its $250 million collaboration with Pantera Capital.
