A recent study by CoinGecko reveals that the cost of Apple’s latest smartphone, the iPhone 17, has seen a significant decrease in price when measured in Bitcoin and Ethereum. Compared to last year’s iPhone 16, the iPhone 17 is nearly 50% more affordable when priced in these cryptocurrencies.

The CoinGecko report indicates that the iPhone 17 now carries a price tag of approximately 0.0072 BTC, a substantial drop from the 0.014 BTC required for the iPhone 16.

The primary reason for this reduction is not an actual price decrease by Apple, but rather the substantial appreciation in the value of Bitcoin. Bitcoin’s price almost doubled, increasing from $57,049 during the iPhone 16’s launch to $111,033 at the time of the iPhone 17’s release.

This trend isn’t limited to the standard iPhone 17. According to the CoinGecko data, the iPhone Air is priced at 0.0090 BTC, while the more advanced iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models are available for 0.0099 BTC and 0.0108 BTC, respectively.

A similar pattern emerges when analyzing the price in Ethereum.

Purchasing an iPhone 17 requires just 0.1866 ETH, significantly less than the 0.3386 ETH needed for the iPhone 16. This change reflects Ethereum’s impressive price surge from $2,359.57 to $4,282.40 over the past year, representing an increase of over 80%.

This isn’t the first instance where cryptocurrency gains have altered the affordability of iPhones.

Back in 2011, when Apple launched the iPhone 4S with a price of $649, the equivalent cost in Bitcoin amounted to over 162 BTC, with each Bitcoin valued at approximately $4.

Contrast that with today, where the iPhone 17, priced higher at $799, requires less than 0.008 BTC. This represents a staggering 99.9% decrease in the Bitcoin needed to purchase a flagship iPhone over a span of 14 years.

Ethereum’s journey paints a similar picture. In 2015, an iPhone with a $649 price tag would have cost around 876 ETH. A decade later, the latest iPhone can be acquired for less than one-fifth of a single ETH.
