Hong Kong authorities have apprehended two suspects for allegedly stealing electricity from elderly care facilities to fuel cryptocurrency mining operations.

Citing a report from the South China Morning Post, investigations suggest that the individuals secretly installed crypto mining rigs within the ceiling spaces of two separate nursing homes during renovation projects.

The scheme was uncovered when one of the homes experienced recurring internet outages. During troubleshooting, IT personnel discovered unfamiliar hardware concealed above an office ceiling. A subsequent inspection at a different facility revealed similar hidden equipment.

These devices were apparently utilizing the care facilities’ electrical grid to mine digital currencies.

The arrests occurred on September 5th in the Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po districts. Investigators believe the two individuals acted independently, with no apparent connections to any organized group. They face charges related to the unauthorized and illegal use of electricity.

Inspector Ng Tsz-wing, from the Sham Shui Po technology crime unit, indicated that the equipment was strategically placed during the building’s renovations. This unauthorized power consumption led to an increase of approximately HK$9,000 (US$1,153) per month in electricity expenses.

Authorities are now encouraging building managers and care facilities to closely monitor both electricity usage and network activity. Inspector Ng advised regularly checking for unexplained fluctuations in utility bills or internet service disruptions. Furthermore, organizations should carefully oversee contractors and conduct regular physical inspections of less accessible areas.

Under Hong Kong’s Theft Ordinance, the unauthorized consumption of electricity is classified as theft and carries a potential prison sentence of up to five years.
