After a substantial break spanning roughly two and a half years, the highly anticipated fourth season of Netflix’s fantasy series, The Witcher, is finally approaching. A promotional trailer debuted during a different type of intense showdown, the Canelo vs. Crawford boxing match, offering a first glimpse at the new Geralt of Rivia: Liam Hemsworth. Hemsworth steps into the role following Henry Cavill’s departure after the conclusion of season three. The premiere is scheduled for October.

The prior season of The Witcher concluded with its principal characters scattered across the Continent (a synopsis for season 4 states: “Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri are separated by a devastating war and numerous adversaries,” but “encounter unexpected allies ready to join them.”). The change in casting for Geralt doesn’t appear to stem from any plot-related reason; Cavill apparently chose to pursue other projects. Perhaps, but hopefully not more DC films simply because Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson invited him to the set of Black Adam. Although… there’s Warhammer.

See the trailer that reveals what he missed out on when he decided to leave.

Cavill’s portrayal of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher was characterized by a remarkable dedication to staying true to the source material created by Andrzej Sapkowski (as demonstrated by his passionate feelings about Roach, the horse). Cavill fully immersed himself in the part, shaping Geralt’s taciturn persona and even revising certain scenes to better align with the character’s intrinsic nature. His profound connection to Geralt, in tandem with his personal investment and history, gave the series a vital core.

Behind the scenes, Cavill’s choice to leave sparked widespread speculation about the circumstances. While publicly he described his exit as “passing the torch,” various reports suggest creative differences regarding the show’s faithfulness to the books and games. Former writers have mentioned a dismissive attitude toward the source material, and Cavill himself implied that he recognized when to step away from a role that no longer felt appropriate. I would argue that showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has been incredibly driven and creative in adapting Sapkowski’s novels from the very start. And judging by the major contract Netflix offered her in 2021, the streaming giant was impressed by her work. (Her recent Witcher project was the better-than-average animated Sirens of the Deep.) Therefore, even with Cavill’s departure, Hissirch is back as the showrunner for season 4.

It’s difficult to picture The Witcher without Cavill, but here’s something to consider: Hemsworth is fantastic in Land of Bad. The trailer gives the impression that he has the skills to effectively wield Geralt’s sword. Only time will tell whether he can fully embody the character. The positive news is that Laurence Fishburne will also be featured as Regis, the vampire hunter. It’s hard to imagine anything going wrong with that.

All eight episodes of The Witcher season 4 will be available on Oct. 30.
