American Express has introduced “Amex Passport,” a novel program designed for U.S. cardholders. It allows them to accumulate digital travel badges on a secure blockchain, offering a unique way to commemorate and cherish their global adventures.
The company explains that participants automatically receive these badges when using their Amex Consumer Card for in-person transactions in over 130 nations. Each badge serves as a distinct digital collectible, personalized with travel highlights, stored securely on a blockchain, and easily shared with friends or across social media platforms.
Amex Leverages Blockchain Technology for Traveler’s Digital Badges
The Amex Passport system automatically generates a digital travel badge each time a cardholder makes a purchase with their American Express Consumer Card in a country they haven’t previously visited. This badge showcases the location of the purchase, the date, and a unique design symbolizing that destination. American Express retroactively awards badges for trips taken within the past two years, enabling new members to begin their collections with a U.S. badge, reflecting a portion of their previous travel experiences.
Each badge exists on-chain as an ERC-721 token, residing on Base (an Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain), ensuring immutability and preventing alterations, duplication, or deletion. While blockchain enhances the security of travel records, American Express emphasizes that only the country or region visited, the badge’s description, and the date of acquisition are recorded. Sensitive personal information such as names, account details, and specific trip notes remain confidential.
These digital badges are designed for collection, enjoyment, and social sharing within the Amex Passport platform and cannot be transferred elsewhere. The program’s primary goal is not to establish a marketplace, but rather to provide customers with a way to celebrate their travel memories.
The program is available at no cost to qualifying U.S. cardholders, with eligibility requiring members to be at least 18 years old and possess an American Express Consumer Card linked to their online account.
Cardholders can enhance each badge with personal details and anecdotes about their travels. This might include recalling a favorite meal, a memorable landmark, or an outstanding hotel or bed-and-breakfast stay. These personal stories transform each badge into a cherished memory. American Express further provides an interactive map showcasing all collected badges, allowing users to relive their experiences and contemplate future travel destinations.
Members can readily share their badges on social media to showcase their adventures to friends, save them on their devices, or directly send them to family and loved ones.
According to an American Express survey, 73% of individuals desire more advanced digital tools to preserve their travel memories. These findings suggest that many travelers believe photos or receipts are insufficient to fully capture the essence of a trip. The survey also revealed that 65% of participants missed the tradition of receiving physical travel stamps upon entering a new country. They viewed these stamps as tangible evidence of their travels, providing a lasting reminder for years to come.
American Express aims to recapture the excitement of collecting travel mementos with its blockchain-based digital badges, ensuring security, permanence, and ease of sharing. Travelers can also rest assured that their badges will be immune to loss, damage, or fading memories.
