In response to escalating reports of fraudulent activity, Forsyth County, Georgia, is considering new local laws governing Bitcoin ATMs. County commissioners were informed by the Sheriff’s Office that area residents have been swindled out of a staggering $5.9 million through various scams so far in 2025, according to news coverage by 95.5 WSB.

“We’ve seen instances where individuals have deposited sums exceeding $100,000 into these Bitcoin ATMs, only to be victims of scams involving fees that reached almost 30%, with one scam exceeding $30,000 in fees alone,” explained Captain Bill Franco.

Following these concerning revelations, the county commissioners have approved a motion directing the county attorney to develop a proposed ordinance. The aim is to mandate prominent displays of fraud warning notices and establish regulations designed to actively prevent fraudulent activities related to cryptocurrency ATMs.
