• Nvidia Pledges $700 Million Investment in UK’s Nscale for Advanced AI Computing
  • Nscale and Microsoft Partner to Develop the UK’s Foremost AI Supercomputer, Powered by 23,000 Nvidia Graphics Processors
  • OpenAI, Nvidia, and Nscale Team Up to Introduce Stargate UK, a Massive GPU-Driven Infrastructure Initiative

Nscale, a UK-based company specializing in AI infrastructure and originating from a spin-off of the cryptocurrency mining venture Arkon Energy, has successfully secured a substantial $700 million investment from Nvidia. This funding will significantly accelerate the development of its advanced, large-scale data centers.

This strategic move positions Nscale as a pivotal player in the United Kingdom’s ambition to become a leading global hub for artificial intelligence. This endeavor has already attracted considerable financial backing from major technology corporations, evidenced by significant investments from tech giants, including a noteworthy $6.8 billion commitment from Google.

The financial commitment to Nscale is integrated into a wider collaborative effort between Nscale, Nvidia, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

The UK’s Premier AI Supercomputing Facility

Collectively, the involved organizations are pledging to deploy an impressive total of 58,640 Nvidia GPUs throughout the UK, with the potential for expansion reaching up to 300,000 GPUs on a global scale.

Nscale and Microsoft have jointly pledged to establish the UK’s largest dedicated AI supercomputer at Nscale’s Loughton-based campus.

“We are in the process of constructing the digital foundation essential for the AI revolution, strengthening ties between the US and the UK, and fostering new opportunities for both nations,” stated Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft.

The Loughton site will provide a robust 50MW of AI processing capacity, with the ability to scale up to 90MW, and will initially host 23,040 cutting-edge GB300 GPUs by 2027.

In a separate initiative, Nscale, OpenAI, and Nvidia are collaborating on the creation of Stargate UK, a sophisticated infrastructure platform primarily focused on accommodating sovereign AI workloads.

OpenAI is planning an initial deployment of 8,000 Nvidia GPUs by early 2025, with future expansion capabilities reaching as high as 31,000 GPUs.

“The UK boasts a rich history of pioneering advancements in AI and currently serves as a hub for leading AI researchers, a vast community of ChatGPT users, and a government that swiftly recognized the transformative potential of this technology. Stargate UK will leverage this solid foundation to expedite scientific discoveries, enhance productivity, and stimulate economic expansion,” commented Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.

Nscale CEO Josh Payne stated, “This landmark commitment from Nscale underscores the UK’s capacity to shape the future of AI in collaboration with our US-based partners. Maintaining global competitiveness necessitates the development of world-class AI infrastructure. These announcements represent the most substantial deployment of AI infrastructure within the UK to date.”

“We are committed to ensuring that computational resources are readily available for UK start-ups, scale-ups, and established enterprises, demonstrating the UK’s potential to be a significant contributor to the AI landscape, rather than merely a consumer,” he further added.

“Today signifies a pivotal moment in the technological partnership between the United States and the United Kingdom,” remarked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

“We are witnessing the ‘Big Bang’ of the AI era, and the United Kingdom occupies a uniquely advantageous position, characterized by a convergence of world-class expertise, groundbreaking research, and thriving industry. By investing in advanced AI infrastructure and supporting British start-ups, we are empowering the UK to harness the full potential of AI – driving innovation, generating employment, and catalyzing the next wave of industrial advancement.”

Nvidia’s investment in Nscale emphasizes the rapid growth trajectory of the startup, which only emerged from stealth mode last year and was not even operational when OpenAI triggered the generative AI boom with ChatGPT in late 2022.
