In Ridley Scott's iconic 1979 film, Alien, the fearsome Xenomorph is mostly kept in shadow. This artistic choice was influenced by both budget constraints and Scott's directing style. Some monster shots haven't aged well. Later, James Cameron's Aliens unleashed hordes of Xenomorphs, and subsequent movies expanded our view of the franchise's "perfect organism." However, one element remained unseen... until now.

The latest episode of Alien: Earth delivers a unique experience exclusive to a story set on our planet: the Xenomorph in sunlight. While previous films confined the creatures to dimly lit spacecraft or eerie alien worlds, the FX series unfolds on a tropical island governed by a powerful, unscrupulous billionaire. The narrative unfolds, leading the Xenomorph out of Boy Kavalier’s hidden laboratory and into the full glare of day in episode 7.

According to Dana Gonzalez, the episode’s director and executive producer, bringing this vision to life presented significant challenges.
“It’s a daunting concept,” Gonzalez revealed in an interview. “This is the first time viewers will see the Xenomorph fully exposed, in broad daylight. It’s always been shrouded in darkness.”
Gonzalez and showrunner Noah Hawley agreed that this moment needed to feel authentic and well-deserved. *Alien: Earth* could have easily begun with Xenomorphs rampaging across the globe. The creative team’s choice to wait until episode 7 demonstrated remarkable narrative control.
“The beauty of this approach lies in its careful build-up,” Gonzalez explained. “Noah understood the audience’s mindset was key to accepting this reveal.”

While establishing a realistic scenario for daylight Xenomorph encounters was a challenge, filming these scenes presented new hurdles. The solution for *Alien: Earth* was straightforward: a talented stunt performer in a Xenomorph suit.
This role is filled by Jayde Rutene. (Earlier in the series, Cameron Brown portrayed the larger Xenomorph until Sydney eliminated it.)
“She’s an incredibly skilled professional,” Alex Lawther, who plays Hermit, remarked, noting the advantages of working with a stunt performer over other alternatives. “It’s far easier to act opposite a real person than an animatronic creation or, even worse, a tennis ball on a stick.”
Gonzalez concurs, stating: “The authenticity of the performance is what makes it so effective; it’s truly practical.”
