Expect a lot of carnage when Marvel’s Wolverine arrives. The initial gameplay reveal for the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive, Marvel’s Wolverine, showcased during Wednesday’s State of Play event, made that abundantly clear. Prepare for impressive visual fidelity, especially when it comes to the combat!

Beyond the debut trailer, Insomniac Games has confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine is slated to be a major release for Sony in the fall of 2026. For those concerned about a softened, more family-friendly portrayal of Logan, fear not. The iconic X-Men character seems fully prepared to utilize his claws with deadly precision in what will be his first standalone video game adventure in quite some time.

See it for yourself in the trailer below:

Liam McIntyre will be providing the voice and likeness for Wolverine, who in this storyline is attempting to piece together his fragmented past. Standing in his way are numerous cyborg adversaries who are determined to prevent him from uncovering the truth. As stated by Aaron Jason Espinoza from Insomniac on the PlayStation Blog, “He’ll make a lasting impression on enemies, utilizing swift, fluid, and rapid offensive maneuvers and abilities that will dismantle anyone foolish enough to stand in his path. Wolverine may project an aloof exterior, but he won’t hesitate to engage up close and personal when the situation demands it.”

This journey will take Logan across diverse landscapes, ranging from the expansive Canadian wilderness to the brilliantly illuminated streets of Tokyo. He will encounter familiar faces such as Omega Red and Mystique, as well as confront new threats, including the Reavers, one of the game’s principal enemy factions. Espinoza explains that the development team’s aim is to harmoniously blend the intense combat with a deeply engaging narrative, while forging new territory with a game that’s “much darker and more brutal than you might expect from Insomniac.”

This is promising news, despite some visuals within the trailer evoking a feeling similar to watching a Mortal Kombat fatality. The question remains: Can Marvel’s Wolverine evolve into something beyond just an extreme showcase of cutting-edge visual storytelling? Hopefully, it will. Insomniac has teased that further reveals are planned for Spring.
