Cyber thieves from North Korea are employing a fresh scheme: leveraging compromised accounts to create digital currency before absconding with it.
On Wednesday, a cyberattack orchestrated by suspected North Korean actors resulted in the theft of over $1.2 million from Seedify, a platform supporting blockchain endeavors. This incident, which specifically targeted cryptocurrency developers, revealed a novel method where illicit tokens are generated before being siphoned off.
Seedify, a launchpad specializing in gaming, decentralized finance, AI, data analytics, and NFTs, reported the breach, attributing it to a “DPRK-linked group with a history of Web3 hacks.” The attackers reportedly gained unauthorized access, creating a substantial volume of virtual currency using compromised private wallet keys belonging to a developer.
The perpetrators exploited the obtained login details to alter crucial platform settings, facilitating the unauthorized token creation and subsequent theft.
