Thane’s Crypto Crime Crackdown

THANE: To combat the growing number of digital offenses occurring within the city, the Thane Police have established a dedicated Cryptocurrency Investigation Unit at the Thane Cyber Police Station.Previously, all police stations under the Thane jurisdiction included cybercrime divisions, each staffed with two specialists responsible for examining instances of digital fraud, identity theft, phishing schemes, and other online wrongdoings. However, probes increasingly revealed that criminals were using cryptocurrency to divert funds. The pseudonymous and decentralised attributes of crypto made it tough to track down deals and recover stolen funds, which has left many helpless.Recognizing this vulnerability and the pressing need for specialised knowledge, the Thane Police Commissioner, Ashutosh Dumbre, formally launched the city’s very first Cryptocurrency Investigation Cell. This specialised unit is composed of police staff who are experts in cryptocurrency, blockchain tech, and digital currency accounts. The officers were handpicked from the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) and the Cyber Police Department to foster collaboration when investigating sensitive cases.Critically, members of this specialised team will lead investigations related to cryptocurrency while simultaneously providing relevant training sessions and instruction to law enforcement within all Thane police departments.“This action will give our team the required tech skills needed to be ahead of criminals misusing cryptocurrency. Our intention is to boost investigation capabilities, ensure justice is served rapidly, and inspire confidence among our citizens,” said Commissioner Dumbre.
