The world of Atomfall presents a landscape teeming with peculiar mysteries and unexpected twists. What initially appears as a straightforward exploration of post-apocalyptic Britain quickly evolves as you delve into the rock quarries and subterranean tunnels of the northern region. Successfully navigating this region requires a clever approach, as the labyrinthine underground networks pose a significant challenge.
The “Quarantine Zone” within Atomfall consists of four distinct above-ground areas, all connected by a network of underground passages leading to a central scientific complex called The Interchange.
Each zone offers unique thematic elements, distinct enemy encounters, valuable resources, and engaging side missions that you will encounter along the way to concluding the game’s central storyline.
While the game provides area maps, understanding the path toward the next zone can be difficult. Remember that some areas are inherently dangerous, requiring you to carefully trespass as you progress.
If you’re struggling with orientation, consider adjusting the difficulty via the “Exploration” tab in the Playstyle settings. This action activates a compass and provides navigation hints.
As you connect the hub worlds into a continuous path, access to each zone becomes simplified through The Interchange and the map marker system. Here’s a look at all the playable zones unlocked thus far:
Slatten Dale
The Starting Quarry With Plenty of Challenges
Slatten Dale is the first major location to explore. Upon finishing the game’s introductory phase, you’ll automatically be directed to this region. Slatten Dale has hidden depths and holds many noteworthy spots.
Crucially, Slatten Dale functions as the principal route toward Wyndham Village, which is a central hub connecting various locations. The area also houses an entrance to The Interchange in the northeast, granting access to new and critical areas.
Other places of interest include Molly Jowett’s trading post in the north and the Slate Mine Caves, where further details about The Interchange entrance can be discovered.
Once you’ve obtained upgraded weapons, the Outlaw camp is worth investigating as it contains valuable loot, but be ready for heavy resistance. Furthermore, a shortcut to Casterfell Woods is accessible via the Sewer Tunnels in the northwest.
Slatten Dale is a comparatively safe zone for gathering resources and equipment, populated mainly by Outlaws.
Wyndham Village
A Tranquil Respite From The Horrors of The Quarantine Zone
Wyndham Village offers the safest environment in the game, although it’s not entirely without risks. It’s accessible via routes from Slatten Dale or The Interchange, with the former being the more secure route.
To locate the entrance, travel to the far side of Slatten Dale from the initial tunnel, close to the Railyard north of the Water Wheels. Upon entering Wyndham Village, you’ll see buildings of note, such as the Church and Town Hall.
Each open building hosts quests. This village acts as a crossroads connecting Slatten Dale, Casterfell Woods, and Skethermoor.
Additionally, a guarded entrance to The Interchange is behind the Church. Trespassing results in an immediate attack.
The village allows exploration without fear of immediate attack, provided you haven’t angered the Protocol soldiers.
Casterfell Woods
A Wild and Dangerous Forest Filled With Fanatical Cultists
Casterfell Woods is treacherous due to its abundant enemies and natural barriers. Expect Outlaws, Druids, feral creatures, and scattered beehives.
There are two primary entries to Casterfell Woods. Entering via the Sewer Tunnels from Slatten Dale involves combat and the acquisition of the Sewer Key.
Alternatively, from Wyndham Village, follow the coastline path to the left for safe passage into Casterfell Woods.
The Woods hold importance as the home of Mother Jago and the pagan Druids. Speak with Mother Jago to learn the recipe for Special Tonic, offering resistance against Infected damage critical for exploration of the Medical facility in The Interchange.
The Stone Circle, Casterfell Dam, and Castle Ruins require exploration. Casterfell Woods represents the best location for farming both Herbs and Spores, which grow throughout the zone.
Skethermoor
A Highly Policed Area Where Each Step Requires Permission
Skethermoor stands apart from the other zones due to the heavily policed region controlled by the Protocol faction. Trespassing will trigger immediate hostility.
Skethermoor is accessible traveling southeast from Wyndham Village or through the Slate Mine Caves in Slatten Dale.
Speak with Captain Sims in Wyndham Village’s Town Hall and report the murder in the church to secure a Protocol pass, granting permission to enter the camp.
Additionally, the unrestricted areas contain side quests, like the Brinsop Manor cellar labyrinth.
The Interchange
A Grand Underground Scientific Facility Made Up of Several Parts
The Interchange is the massive underground nexus connecting the above-ground areas. Restoring power is crucial to reaching Oberon, which determines the game’s conclusion.
The Interchange is accessed via the large yellow doors in each of the above-ground zones. Locations are listed below:
Slatten Dale: Located in the northeast, close to the Wyndham Village entry point.
Wyndham Village: Situated slightly to the east of St Katherine’s Church.
Skethermoor: Found within the heart of the Protocol Camp.
Casterfell Woods: Directly west of the Wyndham Village entry.
Once inside, the Medical and Robotics sectors must be unlocked. This requires activating the four Data Stores: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta.
Access to the Medical area needs either Alpha or Charlie powered, while activating the Robotics facility demands Bravo or Delta.
Charlie and Delta are accessible through the Slatten Dale entrance. Alpha can be accessed from Wyndham Village or Casterfell Woods. Data Store Bravo is reached only via the Skethermoor entrance. The order is up to the player.
Each Data Store requires an Atomic Battery for the mainframe, unlocking doors and granting deeper facility access.
Connect the Data Stores to the Central Processor utilizing a Signal Redirector after all Data Stores are running. This leads you to the Windscale Plant and the Oberon Dig Site.
Windscale Plant
Where It All Began and Where It All Ends
The Windscale Plant marks the objective in Atomfall. It becomes reachable by reactivating The Interchange. Utilize a Signal Redirector on the Central Processing floor panels to unlock the path to Oberon/Windscale Plant when all Data Stores are active.
No above-ground entrance exists. Preparation with weapons and ammunition is essential before going to the Plant. Entering initiates a point of no return, so complete side quests and explore possible endings before proceeding.
Inside, proceed via either the left or right paths toward the Oberon Dig Site. Expect Thralls, Ferals, and toxic flora en route.
While appearing immense, the facility possesses hidden passages and rooms. At the Oberon Dig Site, decide how to interact with the mysterious artifact.
Remember the route traveled to the Oberon Dig Site, as your chosen ending might require a rapid exit before devastation.
