Funcom, the developers behind the highly anticipated Dune: Awakening, have announced a workforce reduction plan. The move, described as a “restructuring,” mirrors a trend of job cuts currently affecting numerous studios within the video game industry.

According to a statement released to GamesIndustry.biz, Funcom intends to “reorganize its teams and reallocate resources across various projects and studios.” The company states that this strategic shift is necessitated by “the transition from active game development to ongoing live service operations, coupled with preparations for a significant console launch scheduled for the coming year.”

“Regrettably, this decision requires us to part ways with valued members of our team,” Funcom acknowledged. “This challenging process is commencing immediately, and we are presently unable to ascertain the precise number of affected individuals. We are actively seeking alternative employment opportunities for those impacted. Our immediate priority is to offer comprehensive support and guidance to these team members, and we respectfully request your understanding as we refrain from further commentary during this period.”

Funcom’s official statement emphasized that Dune Awakening, their massive multiplayer online game which launched in June, is “the most significant release in our company’s 32-year history” and “demonstrates remarkable potential.” The game will continue to receive updates and enhancements moving forward.

It remains disheartening to witness companies touting their successes and future prospects, only to subsequently announce layoffs impacting the very individuals who contributed to those achievements.

Despite encountering initial technical issues, our reviewer Brendy shared the following thoughts on Dune Awakening in his review:

Awakening is deeply rooted in Dune lore and faithfully captures the essence of Herbert’s universe. I appreciated the game’s immersive world and the sensible way Funcom translated key elements of the fiction into the gameplay. For those who were captivated by the recent Dune films and long to explore that desert setting, this game offers an excellent opportunity to do so. Just be prepared for a significant amount of resource gathering, like mining and water collection, alongside the more action-oriented aspects.

We extend our best wishes to all Funcom employees affected by these workforce reductions.
