Norway Considers Temporary Halt to New Bitcoin & Crypto Mining Hubs to Save Energy

The Norwegian government has revealed intentions to implement a short-term prohibition on the establishment of new data centers dedicated to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency mining operations.

The rationale behind this decision, as stated by the government, is to prioritize the allocation of electrical power to different industries and crucial sectors of the economy, believing it serves a more significant purpose for the nation’s welfare.

Karianne Tung, the Minister for Digitalization and Public Administration, commented, “The current administration, led by the Labour Party, is determined to curtail cryptocurrency mining activities within Norway’s borders to the greatest extent possible.”

The Labour Party’s decision stems from concerns about the substantial electricity demands of energy-intensive Bitcoin and crypto mining enterprises, which they argue contribute minimally to the overall economic prosperity of the country.

She elaborated, stating that “Mining cryptocurrencies consumes a considerable amount of power while generating only a limited number of jobs and revenue for local communities.”

According to government sources, the temporary suspension could be put into effect as early as autumn 2025.
