A hallmark of video games, the boss encounter typically involves defeating a powerful enemy and progressing to the next. However, sometimes these adversaries aren’t gone for good. On occasion, a boss will reappear, returning tougher, faster, and presenting a significantly greater challenge.

This provides a unique gaming experience. Players may anticipate a certain battle style only to find their tried-and-true strategies suddenly ineffective, forcing them to learn a completely new approach to defeating the boss.

This recurring boss trope is found across numerous genres. While not always executed successfully, certain games have mastered the art of bringing back bosses who are not only stronger but also more formidable, often multiple times.

Let’s delve into some games where previously defeated bosses hold a serious grudge, returning with renewed intensity and a desire for revenge.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

The Old Man With The Stick

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 stands out as a truly exceptional game, offering a roster of diverse bosses. Among them, Renoir is a recurring challenge you’ll encounter multiple times. Your initial confrontation is a trial by fire, demanding precise timing for Gradient Counters and split-second parrying skills.

Although demanding, the first fight is surmountable. However, just when you feel you’re approaching a turning point in the narrative, Renoir emerges once again, exhibiting such ferocity that some of his strikes become almost imperceptible during the second phase. You feel like it can’t get any worse, until you approach the final boss fight unprepared.

This encounter features Renoir in a drastically altered state. The environment warps into something otherworldly, demanding an unwavering focus on timing to navigate the onslaught of attacks that Renoir unleashes. Only the most skilled players will be prepared. In total, Renoir will challenge you three times, with each battle growing increasingly intense.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Genichiro Stands In Your Way

cropped-Genichiro Ashina from Sekiro

Sekiro has gained recognition as one of the finest and most challenging games of recent memory. While you encounter a variety of bosses throughout the campaign, you’ll face a select few multiple times.

The Guardian Ape is a prime example, a true nightmare of a battle. The moment you think you’ve emerged victorious, the terrifying second phase starts without pause, throwing you against its headless form, an even greater challenge than before. And later, the sheer lunacy of a double Guardian Ape fight unfolds. All that’s left to do is to hope for divine intervention.

Genichiro, the story’s primary antagonist, is another foe you’ll confront on several occasions. The first battle tests your parrying skills and assesses your mastery of newly acquired abilities. It’s no easy feat, but it pales in comparison to the second encounter.

When Genichiro starts using the Way of Tomoe, you’re in for a fight. If you haven’t yet mastered the Lightning Reverse ability, brace yourself. Genichiro becomes significantly more aggressive. Without mastery of Lightning Reverse, he can quickly incinerate you using an array of magical attacks. It’s a dramatic evolution from the initial, more grounded sword fight.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3

The Alphabet Of Enemies

N Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 might be the pinnacle of the series, thanks to compelling boss encounters and character development. One consistent antagonist is the Moebius enemies, specifically, Moebius N.

Essentially a mirror image of the protagonist, Noah, N provides significant challenges each time he appears. While the initial fight serves as an introduction to this formidable foe, his subsequent appearances become incredibly difficult. At one point, you face him in a grueling sequence that tests your abilities. N’s arsenal includes devastating art combos and lightning-fast movements that thwart flanking maneuvers, all while dealing massive damage.

With each encounter, N’s powers visibly increase. Each battle requires you to adapt to his new tricks and find new ways to counter his abilities, often necessitating a change in your character class.

Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth

Sephiroth… Sephiroth

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth features a plethora of memorable boss fights, with the encounters against Sephiroth standing out as the most remarkable. These battles occur in various forms, each one more intense than the last.

Your encounters against him play out in three stages, serving as the ultimate trial during the game’s climax. Depending on your combat proficiency, this challenging sequence can last over an hour.

The initial phase pits Cloud and Zack in a back-to-back duel against a relatively human-looking Sephiroth. It’s a fast-paced, over-the-top JRPG experience. The first phase isn’t all that difficult, but it’s cinematic as hell. Then things get crazy. Sephiroth, defeated, soars away only to return as Sephiroth Reborn, a towering monstrosity requiring a drastically different combat approach.

With a Jenova fight sandwiched in between, Sephiroth demands one final showdown. This time, Cloud and Aerith face him in what seems to be a heavenly realm. What becomes clear is the sheer difficulty of this battle. Sephiroth holds nothing back, unleashing a series of devastating attacks capable of instantly ending the game, along with a countdown attack that forces an automatic game over.

It’s an amazing final sequence, with Sephiroth proving incredibly difficult to put down, even after you defeat what appears to be his final form.

God Of War

Baldur Knocks

Baldur from God of War

God of War breathed fresh life into the series, kicking things off with a thrilling opening as Baldur arrives at Kratos’ doorstep, initiating an incredible boss battle.

While not overly challenging, the fight is visually stunning, feeling more like a movie experience than a game. As the game’s primary antagonist, Baldur isn’t going down without a fight.

A second encounter occurs later in the game, with significantly increased stakes. Baldur’s moveset has expanded, and you’re fighting him on the back of a dragon, making it feel like the perfect cinematic boss fight. The difficulty level is raised, but it’s still nothing overwhelming.

However, everything changes during the final battle. Baldur is consumed by rage after seeing Freya for the first time in years, making him far more aggressive. Freya frequently intervenes, forcing you to evade vine traps and dodge powerful attacks from a giant in the background.

This fight builds to an epic finale that feels like a proper final boss encounter.

Dodging is essential in these fights. If you haven’t mastered it by now, brace yourself. Vholran’s health increases with each battle, as does his aggression, and his attacks become increasingly extravagant. By the final confrontation, he’s capable of wiping out your entire squad if you aren’t vigilant with your health and maneuvering. His melee attacks demand skillful footwork.

The final one-on-one battle with Alphen feels like a tribute to Final Fantasy 7. It’s a spectacle to witness.
