Law enforcement in Russia recently confiscated approximately 2,700 pieces of cryptocurrency mining hardware from a location in St. Petersburg. This action followed a drawn-out investigation prompted by unusually low energy consumption readings.
The seized items included numerous mining machines, ventilation fans, related cooling apparatus, and two electrical transformers, according to authorities.
Major Cryptocurrency Mining Operation Busted in St. Petersburg
The investigation began after power company inspectors detected discrepancies between official meter readings and the apparent actual energy consumption at the site.
The facility had been linked to the power grid since March of 2018 and operated until August 2025. According to official statements, three individuals from St. Petersburg initially secured a contract to connect a commercial property to the electrical network over seven years ago.

Video footage released by the Interior Ministry via Telegram showed Russian police officers forcefully entering a shipping container packed with operational cryptocurrency mining devices during the raid.
The Ministry released video evidence on their Telegram channel depicting law enforcement breaching secured containers and apprehending an individual during the property search.
Inside one container, numerous rows of actively running mining machines were visible, equipped with cooling fans and systems. Additional rooms housed hundreds more mining rigs.
Evidence of Meter Tampering and Resulting Charges
Based on reports shared by the Interior Ministry, investigators suspect the individuals involved possessed expertise in manipulating the power grid to underreport actual energy usage to the utility company.

The suspects allegedly responsible for operating the illicit cryptocurrency mining farm have been detained and face charges for “property damage through deception or abuse of trust,” according to prosecuting attorneys.
The Ministry has not yet provided an estimate of the total amount of stolen electricity or the monetary value of the theft. Officials also withheld information on which specific cryptocurrencies were being mined at the facility. Police have indicated that the search for potential accomplices connected to the operation is ongoing.
Smaller Cryptocurrency Mining Operations Discovered in Other Regions
This confiscation follows a pattern of similar discoveries across Russia and territories controlled by Moscow. Earlier in September, authorities uncovered an unlawful mining operation in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, where the operators had directly connected 25 mining rigs to the power grid, thereby bypassing standard metering systems. Authorities estimate the damages for that particular network at 14 million rubles (equivalent to $170,633 USD).
In other areas, clandestine mining setups have been found hidden underground or inside modified vehicles like trucks and vans. Regions cited by officials include Dagestan, areas within the North Caucasus, and parts of Southern Siberia – locations where affordable or poorly monitored electricity supplies have drawn illicit mining activities.
