Walmart is now offering a new way for customers to shop: by engaging with ChatGPT to find and buy products.

According to a press release issued on October 14th, shoppers can now search for a variety of items, including groceries, household essentials, and more, and complete their purchases directly within the ChatGPT interface.

This development is a result of Walmart’s ongoing collaboration with OpenAI. After linking their Walmart accounts to ChatGPT, shoppers gain access to a “buy” button that facilitates order placement within the conversational experience.

Walmart highlights that this integration will enable them to gain a deeper understanding of customer preferences and needs. The system is designed to proactively suggest relevant products, moving beyond the traditional search-based model.

Simultaneously, Walmart is actively developing its own AI-powered shopping assistant, known as Sparky, which is designed to assist shoppers with browsing, comparing, and purchasing products.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon shared his perspective:

For a long time, the online shopping experience has been limited to a search box and a list of results. This is about to fundamentally change.

He further stated that Walmart aims to create a more personalized, intuitive, and responsive shopping experience, leveraging internal developments like Sparky and external collaborations like their partnership with OpenAI.
