A legal professional, acting as counsel for two women seeking asylum, has been discovered to have utilized artificial intelligence (AI) in the creation of court documents.
According to coverage in a major news outlet, the circumstance centered around two sisters originating from Honduras, who were requesting sanctuary in the United Kingdom following alleged threats from an organized crime entity.
Their case was brought before the Upper Tribunal, where lawyer Chowdhury Rahman presented their arguments.

Presiding Judge Mark Blundell dismissed the justifications presented by Rahman. He affirmed that the prior judgment contained no errors. However, the judge’s attention was drawn to matters beyond the specific appeal itself.
Rahman had cited a dozen legal precedents in his submitted materials. Upon review, the judge discovered that several of these cases were completely fabricated, while others lacked relevance or failed to substantiate the presented arguments.
Judge Blundell specifically identified and detailed the problematic usage of ten of these citations.
He observed that Rahman appeared unfamiliar with the cited cases and had no intention of referencing them during oral arguments.
Rahman attributed the discrepancies to his individual writing technique and stated that he consulted various online resources during his research. Nevertheless, the judge clarified that the issue at hand was not related to writing style but rather the use of nonexistent or unrelated citations.
Judge Blundell concluded that the most probable explanation for these irregularities was the implementation of an AI-driven instrument, such as ChatGPT, in the creation of sections of the appeal.
