Miami — Jesse Spiro, the Head of Government Affairs at Tether.io, stated that the cryptocurrency sector views the upcoming 2026 U.S. midterm elections as a significant benchmark for the sustainability of Washington’s recent positive stance toward digital assets.
“We’ve witnessed notable involvement and advancements over the past year,” Spiro remarked during a panel at the Consensus Miami 2026 conference, highlighting the approval of the GENIUS Act and strides made in market structure regulations. “However, it’s important to remember that circumstances can always change unexpectedly.”
Spiro cautioned that the elections could potentially create a “seismic impact” on the future direction of the industry, even as cryptocurrency advocacy organizations gear up for major political contributions and grassroots initiatives.
“The crypto conversation shouldn’t be politically divided,” Spiro emphasized. “Ideally, we’ll have legislators who are advocates for the industry, the ecosystem, and effective policies.”
Other participants in the discussion asserted that the industry’s political clout is steadily increasing as November approaches.
Colin McLaren, Head of Government Relations at the Solana Policy Institute, noted that the focus of cryptocurrency political efforts is now on “durability,” aiming to ensure that the next Congress continues to champion the priorities of the industry, including tax reforms and protections for developers.
