Altcoins have encountered a prolonged period of stagnation, but could a change be on the horizon?

Altcoins Await a Breakthrough After Two Years!

The total market valuation of cryptocurrencies ranked outside the top 10 has just surpassed a significant trendline that it has struggled beneath since late 2024.

This movement is noteworthy; the market cap has surged over 10% in just one week, rising from approximately $199 billion to nearly $220 billion.

It’s important to highlight that this surge is happening within a support area that has remained stable for nearly 1,000 days.

Additionally, the timing is intriguing, as crypto analyst AshCrypto pointed out on X that the typical four-year cycle associates 2026 with bearish trends. However, Bitcoin has remained resilient, even in the wake of the unsuccessful Clarity Act vote and the recent Federal Reserve interest rate hike.

Despite this week’s positive movement, the all-time high for altcoins of around $451 billion remains a distant goal. Altseason is not yet being declared.

Conversely…

In other developments, Bitcoin dominance appears to be forming a bearish descending triangle pattern on the weekly timeframe.

If this pattern does break down, we could see a shift in capital from Bitcoin to a wider range of assets, particularly altcoins.

This scenario could sync perfectly with the mentioned breakout in altcoins.

However, caution is advised. CoinShares recently indicated that Bitcoin finds itself in a limbo due to a hawkish Federal Reserve and the recent setback of the CLARITY Act. They predict that BTC won’t surpass $80K decisively before the year concludes unless inflation eases or the Fed adjusts its stance.

It is crucial to note that Bitcoin appears somewhat insulated from regulatory challenges, whereas altcoins like Ethereum [ETH] face more exposure to these risks.

What’s Holding Altcoins Back?

Despite the optimistic perspectives for a breakout, one key indicator remains less supportive. CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index sat at 46 at the time of this report; this is within Bitcoin’s region.

This index has risen from 42 yesterday and from 37 the previous week, showing a positive trend, though still not significant enough.

According to CoinMarketCap’s definition, a reading below 75 does not classify as altcoin season. The index has languished below this mark for several months, far from the peak of 78 recorded in September 2025.

Final Thoughts

  • The market cap for altcoins outside the top 10 has broken a two-year downtrend.
  • Bitcoin dominance shows bearish tendencies, yet the altseason index remains at 46.
