Stellar’s rally of 8% in 2026 contrasts sharply with XRP’s 14% decline, primarily due to their differing starting values, as both assets have tumbled about 40% over the last year.
XRP has garnered $1.71 billion in spot ETF inflows and enjoys considerable institutional support, making it a more attractive investment compared to Stellar.
For XRP to gain positive momentum, it must close above $1.61, while Stellar needs to surpass $0.223; the first to achieve this will indicate where institutional interest lies.
In 2026, while XRP (CRYPTO:XRP) has experienced a 14% drop, Stellar (CRYPTO:XLM) has witnessed an 8% rise. Nonetheless, both cryptocurrencies have faced similar declines over the last year, with XRP down 44% and Stellar down 40%. Therefore, the year-to-date performance does not encompass the entire narrative of the XRP versus Stellar situation.
Recently, both cryptocurrencies performed well; XRP surged by 22% from September 16 to September 23, 2026, to reach $1.58, while Stellar climbed 18% to $0.22. The critical query remains: which one merits your investment today? This depends on what each cryptocurrency offers, the underlying causes for their differing performances in 2026, and the price thresholds they must surpass.

XRP Caters to Banks; Stellar Focuses on Remittance Firms

XRP serves as the primary settlement asset on the XRP Ledger, a public blockchain promoted to banks, payment providers, and corporate treasury departments by Ripple, a private entity. XRP plays a pivotal role in Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity service, acting as a bridge for currency transfers and enabling institutions to conduct international transactions without holding cash in foreign bank accounts.
In contrast, Stellar operates on a distinct blockchain tailored for smaller transfers. Its governance lies with the Stellar Development Foundation, a nonprofit organization. Stellar focuses primarily on remittance services, humanitarian organizations, and fintech solutions in developing economies. For instance, MoneyGram has adopted Stellar’s technology for cash transfers and linking to the USDC stablecoin.

Stellar’s 2026 Advantage is Rooted in its Starting Price

The performance of each coin this year can largely be attributed to their starting prices on January 1, 2026. XRP began this year at $1.84, which was a decrease from its July 2025 peak of $3.65. It experienced a dip to as low as $0.99 in August. Stellar, on the other hand, opened at $0.20, near its lowest point and had peaked at $0.52 in July 2025 before hitting a low of $0.14 in February and beginning to recover.
At the year’s outset, XRP was significantly up from its prior lows, while Stellar was near its low. This trajectory has positively influenced Stellar’s performance in 2026, indicating that the discrepancies are attributed more to timing than to the efficacy of their networks. Annual statistics indicate both currencies have experienced similar declines across the past year.
XRP has rebounded more swiftly from its summer lows, rising from $1.00 on August 18 to $1.46 by August 22, a 46% rise in just four days. Following this, it faced a setback after the Senate voted on the CLARITY Act on September 15. From August 23 onwards, XRP’s rise has slowed slightly, gaining 7% compared to Stellar’s 12%, indicating both cryptocurrencies have been moving in tandem recently.
XRP Must Close Above $1.61, Stellar Needs to Surpass $0.223

XRP needs to sustain a close above $1.61, which it hit as an intraday high on September 22, while currently trading at $1.58—approximately 2% lower than that benchmark. Closing above $1.61 could initiate a new upward trend. Conversely, if it drops below $1.25, its closing value from September 16, it could undermine the recent rally.
Stellar must also achieve a critical price point, needing to close above $0.223, a high reached on August 22, and currently trading at $0.217—about 3% lower than that mark. Until it surpasses this threshold, Stellar’s gains in 2026 can still be interpreted as a rebound from February’s low of $0.14. A fall back below $0.183, the price at the close on September 17, could also negate some of its recent progress.
Is XRP or Stellar the Superior Investment Now?
From our perspective, XRP presents a more promising investment opportunity. Both cryptocurrencies have seen similar declines over the past year, suggesting that Stellar’s 2026 advantage likely stems from its starting point rather than demonstrating overall superior performance. Additionally, XRP benefits from more substantial institutional backing and has successfully attracted $1.71 billion in spot XRP investments since their inception.
The decision to invest in XRP hinges on two critical price levels: it must close above $1.61 to confirm the upward trend, or drop below $1.25, signaling a potential reversal. If XRP breaks through $1.61 prior to Stellar surpassing $0.223, this would illustrate strong support from the investor community behind XRP. Conversely, if Stellar emerges first while XRP struggles to maintain its price, it could indicate a shift in buyer interest towards Stellar’s focus on smaller transactions as we approach the fourth quarter.
