The organization stated that its plans will prioritize support for the Ethereum ecosystem while also ensuring value for shareholders.
Tom Lee, Chairman of Bitmine Immersion Technologies (BMNR), mentioned that the company is nearing ownership of 5% of Ethereum (ETH) and advised investors to “stay tuned” for upcoming developments, though he refrained from disclosing a new target.
During an appearance on the Coinage podcast, Lee elaborated that the company met its 5% target well ahead of the five-year timeline originally anticipated. He noted that this benchmark was chosen because it represents a significant ETH amount capable of positively impacting the Ethereum ecosystem, partially funded by staking yields.
Lee noted that while the initial estimate was five years, “We are currently just 1.2 years in, and it appears we are quite close to hitting that 5% milestone,” he stated.
When questioned about whether BMNR’s next objective was to acquire 10% of Ethereum, Lee explained that the company has engaged in discussions with the foundation, major stakeholders, and various crypto firms, as well as some regulators, over recent months. He emphasized that the goals remain unchanged, including a beneficial impact on the Ethereum ecosystem and enhancing shareholder value.
Approaching the 5% Threshold
Recently, Bitmine made another purchase of ETH. The company held 5,983,940 ETH as of the previous day, representing approximately 4.9% of the total 122.1 million ETH in circulation. This amount was referred to as reaching 98% of its “Alchemy of 5%” goal, to be accomplished in just 15 months. The company also disclosed that 5,067,309 ETH were staked, estimating its total crypto, cash, and marketable securities to exceed $17 billion.
Lee also defended the company’s performance compared to the token holdings, stating that Bitmine outperformed Ethereum by around 45 percentage points from June 30 to year-end last year and by approximately 13 points this year. Currently, the stock trades nearly at the value of its holdings.
Check BMNR’s price closed with a decline of over 1% on Friday, giving it a market capitalization of around $16.6 billion. Retail sentiment surrounding BMNR on Stocktwits has remained in the ‘neutral’ category, with discussions shifting to ‘high’ engagement levels from ‘normal’ over the previous day.
Indications of Change
Lee suggested earlier that Bitmine’s acquisitions might extend beyond Ethereum. In May, he mentioned that the company could reduce its Ethereum purchases in favor of “different investments within the crypto market and has previously utilized funding from slowing Ethereum accumulation to support share buybacks.
