  • Vitalik Buterin conveyed his belief that AI cannot dismantle Bitcoin or Ether.

  • Rather, the indirect threat posed by AI is expected to manifest through advanced phishing scams.

Liron Shapira, co-founder and CEO of Relationship Hero, stated there’s a 50% likelihood that Bitcoin(CRYPTO: BTC) could experience a decline greater than 50% within the next two years due to AI compromising its security mechanisms. In response, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum(CRYPTO: ETH), rejected this perspective in a message on X, asserting he held an “opposite stance” on the matter.

Buterin posited that while AI enables new cybersecurity threats, it simultaneously bolsters cybersecurity infrastructures. He contended that Bitcoin is already capable of handling most security challenges, labeling any imminent risk to its consensus mechanism as “minimal.”

Could AI’s “Act 1” be the precursor? Act 2 May Be 15 Times Larger. Many investors believe they missed the AI wave due to not investing in Nvidia back in 2005. However, analysts suggest we are merely at the close of “Act 1″—the research and development phase, with “Act 2” representing the global deployment.Continue »

Buterin maintained that this viewpoint also applied to Ether, presuming Shapira shared a similar bearish outlook. He offered to wager against Shapira’s pessimistic prediction, yet noted he was already “effectively taking this bet with 90% of my net worth” through his Ether investments. This positive perspective from Buterin could serve as encouraging news for crypto investors.

Are Brighter Days Ahead for Bitcoin?

Bitcoin continues to be mined using the energy-intensive proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism, necessitating robust application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for profitable mining. Over 20 million of Bitcoin’s total supply of 21 million tokens have been mined, with mining rewards halving approximately every four years. This scarcity aligns Bitcoin more closely with gold compared to other cryptocurrencies, leading proponents to believe it will serve as a hedge against inflation and fiat currency devaluation.

Independently, it would require the world’s most advanced AI technologies millions of years to breach Bitcoin’s cryptographic defenses. While quantum computers may eventually be able to reverse engineer Bitcoin’s public keys, developers are proactively addressing this risk with hidden public keys and quantum-resistant encryption.

Consequently, there is no credible danger of AI or quantum computing “breaking” Bitcoin. Instead, AI technologies may inadvertently disrupt Bitcoin through more refined phishing schemes designed to deceive users into revealing their seed phrases; however, such attacks could equally jeopardize traditional bank accounts.

What Lies Ahead for the Cryptocurrency Market?

Bitcoin, Ether, and numerous other cryptocurrencies are currently trading significantly below their peak values due to geopolitical tensions, concerns about interest rate increases, and other macroeconomic challenges that are pushing investors towards safer investments. Traders should focus more on these issues rather than speculating on AI and quantum technology to gauge whether the crypto market can recover over the upcoming months.
