🔐 Ethereum Researcher Suggests AI Could Threaten Crypto Security Before Quantum Computing

Justin Drake, a notable figure at the Ethereum Foundation, has long cautioned that quantum computers could potentially compromise the cryptographic math that secures crypto wallets. On Wednesday, he amplified his warning: AI could be the threat that emerges even sooner, possibly within months.

Drake has urged the crypto sector to consider “Bunker Mode.” His recommendation involves transferring assets to new addresses that haven’t engaged in previous transactions.

Why is this significant? Each wallet is characterized by a private key kept confidential and a corresponding public key derived from it. The public key remains concealed until a transaction is executed. Once a transaction occurs, the public key becomes permanently visible on the blockchain. If a method to derive a private key from a public key is developed, all wallets that have engaged in transactions could be compromised. Wallets that have only received funds remain secure.

The mathematical system governing this is known as ECDSA, utilized by both Bitcoin and Ethereum. Drake posits that it is prudent to anticipate this system being compromised before quantum computers are developed, possibly within months rather than years. This would imply that recovering someone’s private key via a powerful network of GPUs could take just a week.

What has shifted his perspective is the rapid pace at which AI is tackling complex mathematical challenges. He referred to 722 mathematical breakthroughs published by OpenAI on Tuesday. Drake asserts that elliptic curves—the foundational aspect of ECDSA—contain the kind of intricate mathematical structures that an advanced AI might exploit, while the hashing methods protecting public keys are designed for resistance against such actions.

Drake identified firms such as Binance, Bitbank, Robinhood, Bitfinex, and Tether, encouraging them to bolster their cold storage protocols. He also provided some reassurance to smaller investors: approximately 20,000 wallets thought to belong to Bitcoin’s creator are each holding 50 BTC with their public keys exposed. Any hacker would likely target these first, which Drake refers to as “Satoshi’s shield.”

Where does this leave individuals? Drake advises against panic and urges careful actions, focusing on moving self-custodied crypto assets to more secure wallets. Alternative options include utilizing ETFs or partnering with reputable custodians like Coinbase. If one chooses to retain control of their keys, it’s essential to consult experts for optimal management practices.

Taking proactive measures is certainly preferable to ignoring the situation entirely and wishing for it to simply resolve…
