Wallets Linked to Ethereum Foundation Transfer 4,393 $ETH to Kraken

Recent transactions involved two wallets historically tied to the Ethereum Foundation. An analysis by EmberCN revealed that these wallets collectively transferred 4,393 $ETH to the Kraken exchange, with the cryptocurrency valued at around $11.13 million at the time of the transfer. This activity has raised speculation about whether the foundation might be gearing up for another sale, although blockchain data confirms just the transfer of assets, not their eventual sale.

The wallet history traces back about a decade, originating when an address linked to the Ethereum Foundation sent 59,751 $ETH to the recipient in question. EmberCN’s findings indicate that this recipient has since gradually transferred 49,751 $ETH to Kraken. The analyst calculated the average $ETH price during these transfers to be approximately $658, a figure reflecting the market value at those times, rather than actual verified sale proceeds.

This earlier movement constitutes about 83% of the original 59,751 $ETH. However, the recent transfer does not confirm that the Ethereum Foundation maintained ownership or control over the recipient wallet during that time. The historical association with the foundation isn’t the same as proving that the foundation sanctioned the latest transaction.

This distinction is crucial regarding the October 12 transactions, as no official details have clarified the purpose of the 4,393 $ETH deposit. Kraken has not indicated whether these funds were converted to cash, another cryptocurrency, or held within an exchange account. No corresponding documentation of sales or withdrawals was provided in the initial assessment.

Ethereum Foundation Has Previously Liquidated $ETH to Support Operations

This recent wallet activity has highlighted the Ethereum Foundation’s established practices for managing its treasury. In June 2025, the organization released an official treasury management policy that outlines its approach to cryptocurrency reserves, covering operational expenses and future funding needs. This policy permits periodic sales of $ETH to ensure sufficient liquidity for research, ecosystem grants, and other projects.

According to this framework, the foundation assesses its annual spending needs against available reserves to determine how much $ETH may require conversion to fiat currency. Initially, the policy set a target annual operating expenditure that equated to 15% of treasury assets, including a buffer covering 2.5 years of expenses. It also indicates that $ETH sales could be conducted through fiat exchanges or on-chain transactions, with decisions adjusted based on financial circumstances.

In April 2026, the foundation declared its intent to sell 5,000 $ETH via CoWSwap using a time-weighted average pricing strategy. This approach spreads sales over a designated timeframe rather than executing all trades simultaneously. As previously reported, the initiative was described as part of its treasury management efforts, which fund research, development, and grants.

The foundation later completed additional transactions with institutional buyers. In May, it sold 10,000 $ETH to BitMine through an over-the-counter deal at an average rate of $2,292 per token, following two previous transactions with the same buyer. The total treasury activity included approximately 25,000 $ETH as documented in its transaction history.

These transactions are independently recorded and should not be construed as evidence that the wallets identified by EmberCN are part of the foundation’s current treasury. The October 12 transfers have not been linked to any new funding announcements, over-the-counter deals, or revealed treasury sales.

Ethereum’s Price Rises Despite Reported Inflows to Kraken

On October 12, Ethereum traded near $2,554.59, based on data from CoinGecko. The cryptocurrency experienced a rise of about 2.05% over the prior 24 hours but was down 6.85% for the week. Trading volume approximated $8.88 billion, contributing to a market cap of about $312 billion.

At that time, CoinGecko showed $ETH trading around $2,555, reflecting a recovery from earlier losses. The trading range within the past week varied from approximately $2,409 to $2,733, capturing the fluctuations during that period. While the data suggests a daily recovery, it does not indicate whether the transfers to Kraken impacted Ethereum’s trading behaviors.

Current technical analysis provides a mixed perspective. Data from TradingView places Ethereum’s nine-day simple moving average at $2,585.41, slightly above its trading price of $2,563.42. Trading below this average suggests that $ETH has not completely recovered from its short-term price drop following weakness in the 2,700–2,800 range.

Meanwhile, the 14-day relative strength index for Ethereum was at 47.59, well below its moving average of 53.39. This value remains under the neutral 50 level, reflecting a trend of weaker momentum in the current chart review. However, the RSI exceeded the conventional oversold threshold of 30, indicating that it does not signal oversold conditions.

The current figures highlight $2,585 as a key moving-average reference point, suggesting that $ETH must recover this level to counter short-term weakness as depicted in the snapshot. The trading data and technical indicators do not confirm that the exchange transfers caused selling pressure. The daily gain noted on October 12 coincided with the reported wallet activity but does not indicate a direct causal effect.

Ethereum Foundation Continues Treasury Management Through Staking

In addition to asset sales, the Ethereum Foundation has broadened its use of staking to bolster its operations. In February 2026, the organization announced a program incorporating around 70,000 $ETH, with staking rewards reinvested into its treasury. The foundation highlighted that this initiative would enhance the security of the Ethereum network while providing funds for research, grants, and ecosystem growth.

The program commenced with an initial deposit of 2,016 $ETH and employed open-source tools known as Dirk and Vouch for validator operations. Dirk allows for the signing infrastructure to operate across various locations, while Vouch enables compatibility among different Ethereum client combinations. The foundation stated that this design aims to reduce dependency on individual infrastructure providers and promote client diversity.

By April 3, on-chain data revealed that the foundation fulfilled its goal of staking about 70,000 $ETH after an additional deposit of 45,000 $ETH during a single session. As reported, this complete allocation was valued at roughly $143 million based on the $ETH price at that time.

Subsequent treasury actions included unstaking $ETH through Lido. In late April, blockchain tracking noted an unstaking request for about 17,035 $ETH, with further withdrawals documented later. The foundation has not publicly disclosed the specific motivations behind each withdrawal, leaving the reasons for individual treasury movements uncertain.

Its treasury policy outlines provisions for periodic sales of assets, staking, and engaging in decentralized finance protocols. The policy stipulates that the foundation assesses potential $ETH sales over rolling three-month periods in alignment with its reserve needs and operational costs. It mandates quarterly treasury reports for management and the board, along with an annual overview covering significant allocations in fiat assets, unstaked $ETH, and deployed $ETH.
