Hougan: Bitcoin Set to Gain from AI Abundance Economy
In a recent memo, Hougan acknowledged the vast array of potential economic outcomes, many of which are hard to predict. His approach to navigating this uncertainty mirrors his childhood curiosity: to investigate various paths and observe where they lead.
For instance, in a scenario defined by a highly efficient AI-driven economy, he suggested that $BTC could still see significant appreciation. As intelligence becomes more accessible and affordable, he posits that investors may start valuing limited resources like gold and Bitcoin more highly.
“In this ‘journey,’ Bitcoin emerges victorious,” he noted.
On the other hand, in a more pessimistic view that envisions a downturn in the AI sector, Hougan compared the situation to the financial collapse of 2008, referencing defaults from data centers and bond insurers. While Bitcoin might initially drop along with other high-risk assets, he predicts that government interventions intended to boost the money supply could ultimately trigger a bullish phase for Bitcoin.
“Given the geopolitical significance of AI, I believe the likelihood of a government bailout is nearly 100%. Here’s what I anticipate next: an influx of money leads to a robust Bitcoin rally. This is precisely the type of environment Bitcoin was designed for,” he wrote.
In a more stable macroeconomic framework forecasting 3% GDP growth and 4% interest rates, Hougan believes that Bitcoin’s upward trajectory is fundamentally self-sustaining. He predicts that even in the absence of a groundbreaking technological advancement in AI, ongoing ETF purchases, increased corporate treasury investments, and a continuous rise in national debt will sustain demand for $BTC.
Institutional Demand Key to Hougan’s Predictions
The emergence of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the US signifies a crucial shift, as institutional involvement becomes vital in the Bitcoin market. These financial products allow traditional investors to engage with Bitcoin without the need for direct asset management.
Furthermore, corporate treasury management and the potential for national cryptocurrency adoption may impact Bitcoin’s long-term trajectory.
However, demand won’t always increase uniformly. ETF investors have the option to withdraw during periods of market volatility, and corporations may reevaluate their cryptocurrency investments if prices decline or financing conditions worsen. Hougan believes that overall, sustained adoption will outweigh these potential obstacles.
He also maintained that Bitcoin remains capable of appreciating regardless of the Federal Reserve’s strategies on interest rates. If the Federal Reserve implements aggressive rate hikes and the nation faces an economic downturn, government support could help elevate Bitcoin’s value. Conversely, should inflation stay high due to policymakers hesitating to raise rates, Bitcoin might attract increased interest from investors.
Recently, inflation data has heightened concerns that the Federal Reserve might need to tighten its monetary policy even further. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for September rose by 3.7% compared to the previous year, while core inflation was up by 0.3% month-over-month. Both figures surpassed expectations, resulting in traders boosting the chance of a 0.25% rate increase on October 28 to 41.5%, up from approximately 22% just a day prior.
Overall, he asserts that every conceivable economic scenario indicates that the price of $BTC will rise over time.
Signs of Bullish Recovery in Cryptocurrency, Says Hougan
Hougan recently indicated that the cryptocurrency market is beginning to shake off its recent stagnation. He cited the strong market recovery in Q3 and rising network activity as signs that the market is entering a new growth phase.
During Q3, Bitwise’s large-cap crypto index recorded a notable 46.4% increase, with $6 billion in net inflows into US spot Bitcoin ETFs reversing earlier outflows and restoring positive year-to-date performance.
Opinions among crypto analysts remain divided regarding whether the bear market is definitively over. CryptoQuant announced a new Bitcoin bull market in September based on their technical and on-chain metrics, while Bitget’s Ryan Lee suggests the market still requires more evidence of a true cycle bottom. Meanwhile, Hougan believes that substantial ETF flows and active networks are indicative of a recovery.
