Adam Lynch from Charles Schwab asserted that the long-term fundamentals of Bitcoin (BTC) remain intact, despite Ethereum’s significant decline this year.

  • Adam Lynch mentioned that developments in cryptocurrency regulation in Washington could potentially stall if the outcome of the midterm elections shifts power.
  • Nevertheless, he expressed a “somewhat optimistic” view about the possibility of bipartisan cooperation.
  • Bitcoin made a recovery after touching approximately $80,000, its lowest point since September 18. Lynch noted that leverage has contributed to the heightened volatility recently.

This weekend, Bitcoin (BTC) rose from its lowest level in nearly a month, but Adam Lynch from Charles Schwab (SCHW) cautioned that the midterm elections could “grind the crypto industry to a halt.”

As the Director of Equity Research at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, Lynch shared these insights in an interview with Schwab Network. He labeled the current administration as the “most pro-crypto and crypto-friendly” to date.

Recently, Charles Schwab enabled direct Bitcoin purchases for all eligible retail clients among its 40 million customer base.

Bitcoin’s Recovery from Monthly Lows

On Thursday, BTC fell to around $80,000, marking its lowest price since September 18. However, it has seen a rebound since then. Lynch explained that leverage was a key factor in the amplified fluctuations. Traders who had made long bets near $87,000 earlier this month faced losses, and the recovery also impacted some short sellers.

Bitcoin’s current price is at $81,545, reflecting a decrease of 0.6% over the past 24 hours. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits remains predominantly bearish towards BTC, with low discussion activity over the past day. Data from the platform indicates that the user base for Bitcoin shrank by nearly 47% in the last 30 days.

Ethereum Struggles, While Bitcoin Stays Strong

Lynch noted that Ethereum (ETH) has faced greater challenges this month, stating it “took a harder hit” than Bitcoin, which has shown better performance. Ethereum’s value has decreased by around 18% this year, in contrast to Bitcoin’s 7% drop.

On Stocktwits, the sentiment around Ethereum remains extremely bearish, with minimal conversation levels reported in the past day. Platform data shows a nearly 36% decrease in Ethereum watchers over the last month.

However, Lynch emphasized that Bitcoin’s long-term fundamentals continue to be solid. He pointed out that U.S.-based Bitcoin exchange-traded products have attracted close to $60 billion since January 2024, asserting, “It’s become a major player.”

The Significance of the Midterm Elections for Crypto

Lynch’s remarks come amid stagnation in crypto legislation within Congress following the failure of the market structure bill to pass. Yet, he highlighted advancements made by regulators, specifically mentioning a “rulemaking process” initiated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) about ten days ago to create a “tailored framework for specific crypto transactions.” He also noted that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is developing a more comprehensive digital asset framework.

“From a regulatory perspective, I anticipate progress, which I hope will benefit the market,” he stated.

This regulatory momentum has emerged under an administration that Lynch regards as the most supportive of crypto to date, which is why he perceives the midterms as a potential risk.

President Donald Trump has pledged to position the United States as the “crypto capital of the world,” asserting that it will lead the sector. He signed an executive order to establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and last year enacted the GENIUS Act, marking the first federal legislation on stablecoins.

Opposition Introduces Uncertainty Ahead of Midterms

However, contrary opinions exist within Washington. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), a prominent critic of crypto, has openly challenged the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) regarding trust charters issued to crypto companies like Ripple (XRP), Coinbase (COIN), and Paxos (USDP). She has also pushed for the Fed and Treasury to refrain from utilizing taxpayer funds to bail out crypto investors.

A change in political power could amplify the influence of critics like Warren over the crypto agenda. Nevertheless, Lynch remains hopeful for a constructive agreement. He mentioned that lawmakers have made sincere attempts to find common ground on crypto issues. “So I’m still somewhat optimistic.”
