The VIX index, often referred to as Wall Street’s fear gauge, surged significantly on Friday as stock values plummeted due to concerns surrounding AI developments and geopolitical tensions. Bitcoin exhibited volatility during the session as well.

Market participants are wagering that the fear index may continue to rise.

However, based on historical trends of the VIX and Bitcoin’s typically stable weekend price movements, any panic could dissipate rapidly by Monday.

For context, Cboe’s VIX is an indicator of anticipated fluctuations in the S&P 500, the prominent stock index, over the upcoming month. Its calculations are based on the prices of options. An increase in concern leads investors to purchase options for hedging purposes, thereby driving up the VIX.

Bitcoin , uniquely, is the sole macro asset that operates over the weekend. Therefore, Bitcoin’s movements during this time often serve as indicators for Monday’s traditional market performance.

VIX Climbs on Friday

On Friday, the VIX soared 21.5% to reach 19.99, coinciding with a 1.09% decline in the S&P 500.

This marked the VIX’s largest single-day increase since June 5, when the S&P 500 faced its most significant drop in months, based on data from TradingView.
