BlackRock has officially submitted an application for a Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded fund aimed at capping initial losses at around 10% per options tranche while sacrificing some potential gains.

Highlights:

  • On October 19, BlackRock applied for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, designated as PBIT.
  • This fund will utilize options related to IBIT, along with cash and short-term debt instruments, avoiding direct Bitcoin holdings.
  • The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has yet to approve the proposed fund, and the filing alerts investors to the possibility of incurring losses.

Details on the BlackRock PBIT Filing

The leading global asset management firm submitted its application to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on October 19 to create the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, which will trade under the ticker PBIT. This fund will not directly invest in Bitcoin or Bitcoin exchange-traded products. Instead, it plans to trade options associated with the iShares Bitcoin Trust, known as IBIT, while maintaining liquidity through cash, money market instruments, and short-term, high-grade debt.

The PBIT fund will generally diversify its exposure among three successive options tranches, where one expires as another begins monthly. The strategy will primarily incorporate FLEX options—exchange-traded contracts featuring customizable conditions. Each tranche will purchase calls at approximately 90% of IBIT’s initial value and sell calls at higher strike prices, which limits upside gains but contributes to financing the protective mechanism.

This approach establishes an initial loss threshold of around 10% per tranche, exclusive of fees. The filing highlights that this threshold is not guaranteed, as losses may surpass it if Bitcoin appreciates after a tranche’s initiation and subsequently declines. The management fee remains unspecified, and the proposed commencement date is set for 75 days post-filing, though sales will be prohibited until registration is finalized.

Seyffart Highlights the Trade-Off

James Seyffart, a senior analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, characterized PBIT as a buffer ETF, indicating that investors are willing to accept diminished upside potential in exchange for a degree of loss protection. He pointed out that this marks BlackRock’s third Bitcoin ETF submission and noted that the company currently offers only Bitcoin and Ethereum (ETH) investment products.

Seyffart explained that PBIT will function as a 40 Act fund that buys and sells options based on IBIT to achieve pre-determined results. He also referenced similar buffered Bitcoin funds available from Calamos and First Trust. The filing acknowledges that PBIT could significantly lag behind IBIT during a price surge while still incurring losses, warning that high volatility may diminish both the potential upside and the degree of protection offered.

The BlackRock Bitcoin Suite

PBIT would become part of a suite that BlackRock has been expanding since the debut of IBIT in January 2024. As of October 16, the spot fund reported approximately $65 billion in net assets, as per the company’s disclosed data, and serves as the underlying asset for PBIT’s options trading.

Earlier this year, BlackRock pursued approval for a Bitcoin income fund designed to sell covered calls based on its holdings. This product launched on June 16 as the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF, or BITA, trading some potential upside for monthly income streams. In contrast, PBIT will apply a similar options strategy focused on loss protection rather than income generation.
