In contrast to funds stored in traditional banking systems, cryptocurrencies are frequently managed directly by their owners via digital wallets or physical storage methods.

This combination of swift transactions, confidentiality, and non-reversibility makes cryptocurrency holders appealing targets for criminals.

Most cryptocurrency theft occurs online through hacks and scams; however, investigators at Chainalysis have reported a notable increase in “wrench attacks” in recent years.

Their findings reveal that approximately $30 million (£22.6 million) has been stolen through violent robberies during the first half of this year, positioning 2026 to potentially become the worst year on record for violent crypto-related incidents. Additionally, home invasions linked to this trend are also on the rise.

While the US, Brazil, and Thailand are notable hotspots, France has experienced the highest number of attacks, largely attributed to a data breach at a tax office that has seemingly revealed the locations of affluent cryptocurrency owners.

Researchers remarked, “The physical security measures traditionally safeguarding wealth, such as bank vaults and armored vehicles, do not necessarily translate to the crypto world. Frequently, cryptocurrency holders utilize relatively insecure setups, like self-custody wallets, which can be vulnerable without institutional protections.”

James, who ventured into cryptocurrency investment as a novice in 2020, was able to leave his job by 2023 to trade full time.

However, he has now lost all his assets and is considering returning to his previous occupation.

Authorities have not yet identified the perpetrators.

Crimestoppers is offering a £10,000 reward for leads that may assist in the investigation.

Alan Edwards from the charity expresses hopes that the public may have insights into the three attackers, the driver who was waiting outside without a mask, or the individual seen talking on the phone.

“These individuals are clearly serious and appear to be part of an organized crime network,” he noted.

“While some people may hesitate to provide information, we operate independently from the police and ensure complete anonymity for informants.”

The trio of attackers is believed to be in their late teens or early twenties, with one being a Black male who has a scar beneath his left eyebrow.

James admits he has little expectation of retrieving his stolen cryptocurrency but hopes to see the culprits brought to justice.

He wants his experience to act as a cautionary tale.

“They threatened my wife and child,” he shared. “People need to recognize that these dangers are very real.”
