A rising initiative aimed at enhancing privacy in public blockchains has now reached Bitcoin, as VerifiedX has introduced a novel layer designed to protect transactions while retaining the ability to audit.
This innovative system, named Prism, allows for encrypted balances, concealed addresses, and selective disclosure. This setup empowers users to conduct transactions privately while still being able to demonstrate compliance when necessary, as stated in a recent announcement shared with CoinDesk on Thursday.
The introduction of Prism coincides with a significant trend across the industry. This week, the XRP Ledger launched zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) features specifically targeting institutional clients who want to transact without revealing sensitive information on public ledgers.
This development points to what many perceive as a major obstacle for institutional engagement: transparency. While public blockchains foster trust through visibility, they also expose critical information like balances, parties involved, and transaction patterns, which institutions strive to keep confidential in traditional finance (TradFi).
Any advancement in this area holds significant importance when it comes to Bitcoin. As the largest cryptocurrency—often valued higher than the entire crypto market together—Bitcoin serves as the primary entry point for institutional investment. Consequently, enhancements in its privacy and usability features could have a profound impact on the entire crypto landscape, more so than similar updates on smaller networks.
