Investing in cryptocurrency at the height of a significant rally might sound like a risky move, but the performance of Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Solana over the last five years reveals a much more intricate narrative than one might assume.

Had you invested $1,000 in Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC), Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH), XRP (CRYPTO:XRP), or Solana (CRYPTO:SOL) five years ago, you entered the market just before a significant upswing. Bitcoin finished October 2021 at $61,340 and peaked at $68,770 in November 2021, right before a market downturn. Thus, buyers acquired all four cryptocurrencies close to their peak values.

Recently, all four cryptocurrencies have made a comeback over the last three months, with Bitcoin rising 25.6% and Solana increasing by 37.6%. Yet, their values remain considerably lower than they were a year ago.

We analyzed a $1,000 investment in each cryptocurrency made on October 27, 2021, and assessed their current worth. Among these four digital coins, two showed gains while the other two experienced a drop of nearly half their original value.

Coin Price on Oct. 27, 2021 Price on Oct. 26, 2026 5-Year Change Value of $1,000 Now
Bitcoin $58,681 $80,168 +36.6% $1,366
Ethereum $3,954 $2,329 -41.1% $589
XRP $1.00 $1.30 +29.5% $1,295
Solana $185 $101 -45.1% $549

Bitcoin transformed a $1,000 investment into approximately $1,366, representing a 36.6% gain over five years. XRP also performed well, reaching around $1,295 after a 29.5% increase.

Conversely, Ethereum plummeted 41.1%, reducing the $1,000 to about $589, and Solana experienced a decline of 45.1%, leaving a value of about $549.

If you had evenly split your $1,000 investment among the four cryptocurrencies, allocating $250 to each, your total value would be around $950 based on current prices. While the gains from Bitcoin and XRP offset some losses from Ethereum and Solana, the overall investment still reflects a loss after five years.

Bitcoin and Solana Investors Faced Significant Volatility

Bitcoin’s path was anything but stable. In June 2022, it fell to a low of $17,698, which would have decreased the initial $1,000 investment to about $302—a decline of 69.8%. However, it later reached its all-time high in October 2025, boosting that investment to around $2,150.

Solana’s fluctuations were even more pronounced. It dropped to a low of $8.12 in December 2022, slicing the initial investment down to roughly $44, a staggering 95.6% loss. However, it rebounded to $295 in January 2025, increasing the investment’s value to about $1,597.

Investors in Ethereum and XRP also faced considerable declines following earlier gains. By late October 2025, XRP was valued at $2.65 and Ethereum at $4,159, both exceeding their October 2021 prices. Regrettably, both cryptocurrencies saw a drop of 51.0% for XRP and 44.0% for Ethereum in the subsequent year.

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) tracks major U.S. corporations and was valued at $459 in October 2021. By October 23, 2026, it climbed to $760. Including reinvested dividends, a $1,000 investment would have grown to about $1,770, yielding a total return of 77.0%—surpassing all mentioned cryptocurrencies.

The ETF also exhibited a more stable trajectory. Its lowest monthly price during this span was $348 in October 2022, representing a 24% decline—much milder than the drops seen in Bitcoin or Solana.

Employing a dollar-cost averaging approach—investing a fixed amount at regular intervals, regardless of price—would have proven beneficial. By investing $200 in Bitcoin at the end of each October from 2021 to 2025, you would have spent $61,340, $20,504, $34,650, $70,347, and $109,555 per coin.

Overall, those five investments would now be valued at around $1,880 based on current prices, surpassing the one-time $1,366 investment made in October 2021. The 2022 investment was particularly significant as it coincided with Bitcoin’s market low.

Which Cryptocurrency Outperformed a $1,000 Investment from Five Years Ago?

Bitcoin emerged as the leading performer, achieving a 36.6% increase over five years, with XRP following closely at a 29.5% gain. In contrast, Ethereum and Solana continue to trade well below their prices from October 2021. To break even, Ethereum would need to exceed $3,954, which is approximately a 70% increase, while Solana would need to climb past $185, an increase of about 83%.

Meanwhile, an S&P 500 index fund outperformed all four cryptocurrencies, and the strategy of investing in Bitcoin over five years yielded the most favorable result among the group. Bitcoin has maintained its lead, gaining the most among these assets since 2021. If Bitcoin remains above $79,107 (its low in October 2026), the original $1,000 investment will show consistent profits. However, if it falls below $58,681, those gains could completely evaporate.
